The night the Nazi stormtroopers broke into Josef's apartment in Berlin and took his father, Aaron, to the concentration camp, Dachau.

For six months, Aaron Landau, Josef's father, was imprisoned at Dachau Concentration Camp in the south of Germany.

Josef, his sister Ruthie, and his mother Rachel traveled to Hamburg to join Aaron and board the MS St. Louis. On the train, Josef took off his yellow armband and went into the "German" cars to see if they would realize he was a Jew. His armband fell out of his pocket. A member of the Nazi Youth grabbed it and took Josef back to the Jewish cars.

Josef and his family boarded the MS St. Louis bound for Cuba. They planned to take refuge in Cuba, along with everyone else on the ship, until they could get visas to enter the United States.

Isabel was playing her trumpet on the Malecón when the rioting started.

Isabel's father, Geraldo Fernandez had to leave Cuba because the police were going to arrest him for participating in the riots. They make plans to join Iván's family in a boat to leave Cuba and go to Miami, Florida.
