Containment-US foreign policy where the US tried to stop the spread of Communism by creating alliances and helping weak countries resist Soviet advances
Brinkmanship- Policy of threatening to go to war in response to any enemy aggression
Domino Theory- Idea that if nation falls under Communist control, nearby nations will also fall under Communist Control

Yalta Conference

February 1945 - March 1945

The big 3-Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Stalin met and divided Germany into zones. Half of Germany was controlled by Allied powers and the other half Communist. Soviet Communists clearly got the better side of Germany.

Potsdam Conference

July 1945 - August 1945

Stalin(whos super awesome), Churchill, and Truman-ick attended this conference to talk about postwar issues. They also talked about punishments for Nazi Germany.

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

The ridiculous United States decided to give money to countries to rebuild themselves. Of course they didn't give any cash to the USSR because they were trying to suppress the wonderful world of communism.

Formation of NATO

1949 - 1950

This was when ten western European nations to join the US and Canada to form a military alliance. This is CLEARLY a threat to the USSR! In response to this the USSR formed the Warsaw pact. This is a beautiful alliance of countries. We then built the Berlin Wall.

Explosion of Joe I

1949 - 1950

This is when our glorious country exploded Joe I-named after Stalin of course. The US then developed their own nuclear weapon. (Not as good as Joe I)

Korean War

1950 - 1953

So when WWII ended Korea became divided by the 38th parallel-its a line that is 38 degrees north latitude. The north was communist, the south -the form of government all soviets hate-non communist. The north Koreans fought South Korea (obviously),but South Korea had the help of the UN. Eventually fighting reached China and that caused a whole lot of issues-especially for MacArthur. No soviet liked him anyways. North Korea and the UN signed a cease fire. Soviets were the smart ones and stayed out of the war.

Vietnam War

1954 - 1977

So it all started when the French controlled a lot of Southeast Asia. A nationalist group protested this and the French put protesters in jail. Then the Japanese took control during WWII. They left and then France wanted Vietnam back. Vietnamese Communists and Nationalists joined together to fight against the French. Then in 1954 they suffered a big defeat. The US getting into everyone's business supported France. After the defeat there was a meeting to divide Vietnam. In the south was an anti-Communist govt. Well the leader in charge of the south turned into a dictator. But then he got assasinated. So after that the US sent a ton of troops-stupid move. Then the war grew unpopular back in the states-go figure, def didnt see that one coming. So America drew troops out. After the war there were alot of reeducation camps. A lot of refugees left and died at see. Today Communism still rules(and it always will WHOO HOO!) but the situations a lot better.

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955 - 1956

After the dumb US formed NATO with a bunch of traitor countries, the USSR decided to form Warsaw Pact. Its where the USSR took control of several small countries. The Berlin Wall was then built after.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956 - 1957

Egypt got control of the Suez Canal. The Egyptian President-Gabral Nasser sent troops to take the canal The reason why he did this is because he was mad that the Americans and British took away financial funding for the Aswan Dam. See those Americans ruin everything..#americasfault

Sputnik Launched

August 1957 - September 1957

In 1957 our glorious country, the Soviet Union, told the world that they developed a rocket that could travel very far. Its called an ICBM. USSR used ICBM to launch Sputnik-the FIRST unmanned satellite. Thats right America-soviets launched space stuff FIRST!

Cuban Missle Crisis

July 1962 - August 1962

So in 1950 a guy named Fidel Castro took over. The CIA did not like this so they trained a bunch of guys and invaded the Bay of Pigs.(why does the US have to get in everyone's business?) Cubans beat US and soviets set up missiles along the coast pointing towards US. JFK ruined the soviets fun by installing an embargo.

Detente

1970 - 1972

Involved President Richard Nixon and Premier Brezhnev. This is when US backed away from confrontations with the USSR. Finally America does something right!

SALT Talks

1972 - 1973

This is when Nixon visited the USSR and he and Brezhnev signed the SALT I treaty. Its a 5 year agreement that limited the number of intercontinental ballistic and sub-launched missiles a country could have.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979 - 1980

Soviets invaded Afghanistan and expected to get it and get out. Instead they got stuck. So the US tried to help the Afghans by giving them weapons(bad mistake bc then the groups in Afghanistan turned into the Taliban. Nice one America). Then in 1989 new premier Gorbachev took out Soviet troops.

Regan's Strategic Defense

1983 - 1984

Reagan moved away from detente and increased defense spending. This put pressure economically and militarilly on the Soviets. Dang it america!

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

George Marshall, the AWESOME United States secretary of State, proposed the idea that the US gives aid to European Countries. (awesome idea) The plan provided food, machinery, and other materials to help out Western Europe.

This is a very good idea. (Soviet Union is stupid) #USA

NATO Formation

1949 - 1950

After the Soviet Union's stupid Berlin blockade, many Western European nations were scared. (no surprise there) As a result, those nations joined with The great United States of America and Canada to form NATO-North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This signifies that any attack on one of these countries means that it is an attack on all of the other countries.

Expolosion of Joe 1

1949 - 1950

After we had already made atomic bombs, USSR made one in '49. Our great President Truman was determined to have a better bomb. (awesome). USSR is obviously trying to 1-up us #losers

Korean War

1950 - 1953

The 3rd parallel was a line that divided Korea: the communists were in the north and the non-communists were in the south. As great citizens of the world, we were not about to let communism spread, so we stood up for our values and tried to help out South Korea. Also the UN aided South Korea. China helped out North Korea. After the war, the country remained undivided.

Vietnam War

1954 - 1977

Vietnamese Nationalists and Communists vs. the French and the United States, of course. We are such a great country for stepping in. After France was defeated, there was an international peace conference. There, Vietnam was divided.

Formation of Warsaw Pact

1955 - 1956

The stupid USSR was freaked out that we formed NATO, so they formed this pact with East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956 - 1957

Egyptian general Abdel Nasser sent in troops to overtake the British Suez canal. Britain made an agreement with France and Israel to retake the canal. They quickly defeated the Egyptians. Then we had the great idea to force the Israelis to evacuate. The Soviet Union also supported this idea, finally they get something right. When Egypt was placed back in control, the crises ended.

Sputnik Launched

August 1957 - September 1957

In August, Soviets announced that they had been making a rocket. Then they actually did it. (nerds) But of course to show them that we were still better, we put more money into our education departments and launched our own rocket that was much better.

Cuban Missile Crisis

July 1962 - August 1962

This was when the Soviets had the great idea to put 42 missiles in Cuba. We obviously told them to remove the missiles, and blocked off Cuba until the missiles were removed. We weren't about to let those dumb soviets step all over us! #'Merica

Detente

1970 - 1972

Detente was the permanent relaxation of tensions between us and the USSR. Our great President Truman made this with Brezhnev.

SALT Talks

1972 - 1973

It was two rounds of talks between us and the Soviet Union over the issue of missiles. Nixon had the fantastic idea to limit the number of missiles that each country had. Brezhnev agreed.

Invasion of Afganistan

1979 - 1980

The stupid Soviets had the great idea to invade Afghanistan, so we intervened and did our part as Americans and helped out the Afghans. We stopped sending goods to the Soviet Union, and we also boycotted the 1980 Olympics as an effect of this event.

Reagan's Strategic Defense

1983 - 1984

It was a program designed by the great President Reagan to protect us from USSR's missiles. It was a great idea.
