US

Yalta Conference

February 1945

Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin meet at Yalta and split Germany up into zones. Stalin "promised" to hold free elections for the Eastern European countries. Germany would also have to pay the Soviets for their losses of life and property.

Potsdam Conference

July 1945

Truman, Stalin, and Churchill met in Potsdam, Germany. Truman pushed for elections in Eastern Europe, and rightly so. Stalin so rudely refused and said that communists and capitalists couldn't exist in the in the same world which wasn't a smart move!

Containment

1946 - 1947

The idea of containing the horrible idea of communism. Tactic used by the US.

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

Secretary of State, George Marshall, thought of a genius plan to stop communism from spreading. He proposed a plan to give aid to countries in an effort to rebuild Western Europe. This was a spectacular success and the United States provided aid to millions of people. It was a great decision by the US!

Formation of NATO

1949

10 Western European countries so wisely chose to join the US and Canada in a defensive military alliance. This was so great because any attack on a NATO member would result with armed forces from all other member nations

Iron Curtain

1949 - 1989

This is the "curtain" between the Soviet Union and the rest of Europe. The Soviets have control of once free and independent nations but are now be oppressed by the Soviet Union.

The belief that if one country in Southeast Asia falls to communism, it would lead to the fall of other countries around it also.

Korean War

1950 - 1953

North Korea invaded South Korea with the help of the arms and such that they received from the horrible communist Soviet Union. In an effort to drive communism out of South Korea, the United States and the UN make for Korea. Finally the UN regains control of South Korea and the UN and North Korea sign a cease fire. Thanks to the wonderful United States that convinced the UN into helping South Korea, it is now communism free. In the cease fire they agreed to draw the line between North and South Korea at the 38th parallel which was practically the same as it was before.

Vietnam War

1954 - 1973

The United States was aiding France in their endeavor in Vietnam. When France suffered defeat, and we saw it as a chance to keep Vietnam from becoming communists. While trying to defend the country from becoming communistic, we were losing men and so by popular demand, Nixon started pulling troops out of Vietnam. Two years later, the horrible communistic North Vietnamese took over the entire country.

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955

The Soviets were threatened by our great formation of NATO, and decided make other countries join with them into the Warsaw Pact which is just the puny version of NATO.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

Another Arab-Israeli war broke out, and the Egyptians seized control of the Suez Canal. The president of Egypt prompted this attack because he was angered about the loss of financial support for the Aswan Dam. The British decided to attempt to retake the canal, but the Soviet Union and glorious US stepped in and made the Europeans withdraw from the canal, leaving it under the control of the Egyptians.

Sputnik launched

August, 1957

Sputnik was the first unmanned satellite in space, but what is so special about that! We are pouring money into science education so our people will be much smarter the the Soviets.

Cuban Missile Crisis

July 1962

The nasty Soviet, Khrushchev decided to build missiles in Cuba. This was obviously a threat to the US, so we set up a naval blockade and the puny Soviets gave in and removed the missiles from Cuba.

Detente

1970

Under the US president Richard Nixon wanted to reduce tensions between the US and the USSR. This smart decision allowed the Cold War tensions to subside. The premier at the time was Brezhnev.

SALT talks

1972

The wonderful US president Nixon, and the sad communist premier Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Treaty. This treaty limited the amount of arms they could have, a smart play by the USA

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

The Soviets invaded the free country of Afghanistan. Being the nice people that the US is, we helped out the anti Soviets in Afghanistan by providing them with weapons to fight with. All Soviets were withdrawn from Afghanistan later.

Regan's Strategic Defense Initiative

1983

This genius plan of president Ronald Reagan was set up to protect against enemy missiles. We armed Nicaraguan Contras which made the little Soviets scared. This remains as a symbol of the United States' anti-communist ideals.

USSR

Yalta Conference

The US, Britain, and the USSR met at the Soviet Black Sea Resort. A fair decision was made saying that Germany would have to pay the USSR for compensation. Stalin then agreed to help the loosing Allied Forces in the war against Japan. Also Stalin said that he would give eastern European Countries free elections!

Truman, Stalin, and Churchill met at Postdam, Germany. Truman aggressively and violently pressured Stalin to give the East European Countries free election. Stalin wisely said no and backed out of the argument. Stalin later made a speech in 1946 intelligently stated that Communism and Capitalism cannot exist in the same world.

1949

After the us bombed japan with atomic bombs the USSR made their own bomb and exploded it. The name of the bomb was named Joe1 after Stalin. This started the race to create a hydrogen bomb.

Korean War

1950 - 1953

After world war II USSR graciously supported the northern region of Korea while the US stubbornly supported the southern region. The USSR gave North Korea tanks and airplanes and money to defend themselves against the evil South korea. The north invaded south korea, when they crossed the coordinates 38 degrees north latittude, to allow them to be communist as well. it was in their best interest. but then the dang US came in and fought for the south!

seeing that NATO was a threat by the alliance powers against the USSR, the Warsaw Pact was formed. This included the soviet union, east germany, czechoslovakia, poland, hungary, romania, bulgaria, and albania.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

During the second Arab-Israeli war Egypt took control of the Suez Canal as revenge to the British for the loss of US and British financial support for building Egypt's Aswan Dam. The British made an agrrement with France and Israel to take the canal back. Although there were troops sent in, the rest of the world society encouraged them to retreat. In the end Egypt was in control of the Suez canal, as they should be.

Sputnik Launched

August 1957

Rumors were spread that USSR, the most scientifically intelligent, made the first intercontinental ballistic missile. They used this to push Sputnik, the first unmamed satellite into space. They US raced behind them to send their own satellite into space. #waytocopyus #nicetry

Cuban Missile Crisis

July 1962

The soviet leader Khrushev discovered that the US would not resist expansion in Latin America so he planted 42 missile sites in Cuba. President Kennedy saw this as a threat and ordered a naval blockade for Cuba. The Soviets said they would stop giving missiles to Cuba if the US promised not to invade.

Detente

1970

With large amounts of internal unrest the US slowly backed out of the war. Detente is the policy of lessening Cold War tensions. Nixon was in charge of this. The USSR leader at the time was Brezhnev.

SALT talks

1972

SALT stands for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. The US and USSR and later 33 other nations were involved. SALT stated the number of intercontinental ballistic and submarine launched missiles each country could have.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

Afghanistan stayed independent from the US and USSR through WWII but when muslim rebels attacked the USSR invaded. The rebels were armed with US weapons. the US believed that the invasion of Afghanistan was a threat to the middle eastern oil. the US selfishly banned grain shipments to the USSR and childishly boycotted the Moscow Olympics.. Gorbachev took control of the USSR in the 1980s and pulled all of the USSR out of the war by 1989.

Reagan's Stategic Defense Initiative

1983

Reagan slowly moved away from detente and put more effort into putting economic and military pressure on the USSR. Reagan's program, SDI, was to protect the US against any enemy missiles.It was not put into effect but remained a symbol of the US' s annoyingly stubborn anti-communist sentiment.
