Yalta Conference

February, 1945

Our President FDR met with Churchill and the terrible Stalin at the Soviet Black Sea resort of Yalta. There they divided Germany and put it under the control of Allied Forces. Stalin agreed to have free elections.

Potsdam Conference

July, 1945

Sadly FDR has passed away and Stalin is trying to take advantage of us while we are weak. We met with Stalin and Churchill at Potsdam Germany. Churchill tried to get Stalin to hold free elections but he refused.

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

Our Secretary of State, George Marshall, proposed that we should give aid to the needy Europeans. We started giving food, machinery, and other materials. We used the Marshall Plan as a form of containment so that communism couldn't advance.

Formation of NATO

1949

Ten Western European Countries joined with us and our northern neighbors Canada to create a defensive military alliance. We named it the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Explosion of Joe 1

1949

We are caught in a Cold War with the Russians and we are both going to the edge of war but not actually declaring it (Brinkmanship). The Russians of exploded their bomb the Joe 1. Our beloved Truman desperately wanted to beat the Soviets in an arms race for a new type of bomb.

Korean War

1950 - 1953

The North Koreans have crossed the 38th Parallel, we need to contain these communists. We helped out South Korea as much as we could.

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955

The dumb Russians got scared and forced Eastern European countries into their Warsaw Pact. Yet they couldn't even get the biggest communist country in the world to join them. The Iron Curtain divides Europe into two sides.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

Egyptian President Nasser took over the Suez Canal because he was mad at us for ending the financial aid we were giving him. Then Britain and Israel took the Suez Canal but we and the rest of the world pressured them to give it back.

Sputnik launched

August 1957

The stupid Soviets have put a satellite into space. We need to get our own up there!

Cuban Missle Crisis

July 1962

After our complete fail at the Bay of Pigs the Soviets built 42 missile sites. Our JFK ordered them destroyed and but a blockade in between Cuba and the US. Finally the Soviets got smart and destroyed their missiles in Cuba.

Vietnam War

1964 - 1973

The French were defeated and now our president is afraid that Vietnam could threaten the rest of Asia and change one after another into communists countries (Domino Theory)

Detente

1970 - 1973

We have stopped hating the dang Russians as bad as we used to. We are trying to lessen tensions. The Soviets agree to keep tensions low.

SALT Talks

1972

Nixon visited the Soviet Union and went to a series of meetings called the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. Limited how many arms a country could have.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

The dumb Soviets have decided to invade Afghanistan. We are supplying the rebels with weapons needed to fight back.

Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative

1983

Reagan is very anti-communist and decides to put up protection against enemy missiles. Known as the SDI.

Yalta Conference

1945

As the United States, Britain, and us (Soviet Union) met, it was decided to split Germany into zones that would be appropriately controlled by the Allied military forces. In addition to this, Germany was required to pay the Soviet Union compensation for the loss of lives and properties during the war.

Potsdam Conference

July 1945

Despite Truman's push for allowing free elections, Stalin had to refuse and declared that communism and capitalism cannot coexist in the same society and government.

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

The Marshall Plan was the United State's way of giving money to Western European countries in hopes of preventing the spread of communism. Countries under Soviet domination were not allowed to receive Marshall Plan funds, but were able to receive funds from other government plans.

Formation of NATO

1949

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was the military alliance of multiple western European countries joining with the United States and Canada for defensive security.

Explosion of Joe 1

1949

Joe 1 was the Soviet Union's atomic bomb, and in 1949 the USSR exploded Joe 1 threatening Truman who became determined to build a bigger and stronger bomb.

Korean War

1950 - 1953

The 38th parallel was a line crossing in Korea at 38 degrees north latitude where Japanese soldiers surrendered to Soviet forces, however south of this line, Japanese surrendered to American troops leaving a divided Korea. The north retained communist characteristics while the south did not. The UN got involved, as did Nationalist China.

Formation of Warsaw Pact

1955

The creation of the Warsaw Pact was in response to the creation of NATO. The Warsaw Pact included the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

Egypt had controlled the Suez Canal despite it technically being controlled by the British. Britain then got involved with France and Israel in efforts to retake the canal. However, with much influence from the US and Soviet Union, Israel and the other Europeans left Egypt.

Sputnik Launch

August 1957

An intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, was used to push Sputnik into orbit. Sputnik was the first unmanned satellite to go beyond earth's atmosphere. The Soviet's technological advance was seen as a threat by the United States who quickly pushed their sciences.

Cuban Missile Crisis

July 1962

The US attempted to invade Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, but since they were unsuccessful it only gave us the confidence to begin secretly building missiles in Cuba. We had built 42 missile sites before US spy planes discovered them.

Vietnam War

1964 - 1973

During this time France controlled most of Southeast Asia, however many communist revolts were starting to begin. The US was beginning to get involved in an effort to stop the spread of communism. Communist guerrillas, or Vietcong, were reaching out to countries such us (Soviet Union) and China for help. In the end, US troops were slowly withdrawn from Vietnam but this did not immediately stop all war problems.

Detente

1970 - 1974

Detente was a policy put into place by Richard M. Nixon, in hopes to replace brinkmanship (the willingness to go to the brink of war) and to lesson tensions between the US and USSR after the Cold War.

SALT Talks

1972

Five year agreement between Nixon and Brezhnev, limiting the number of intercontinental ballistic and submarine-launched missiles each country should be allowed to own.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

Soviets invaded in 1979 after multiple Muslim group threats to Afghanistan's Communist regime. The US sent armed rebels because they saw Soviets in Afghanistan as a threat to Middle Eastern oil supplies.

1983

Ronald Reagan's program to protect against enemy/communist countries from building a supply of missiles.
