Sadly FDR has passed away and Stalin is trying to take advantage of us while we are weak. We met with Stalin and Churchill at Potsdam Germany. Churchill tried to get Stalin to hold free elections but he refused.

Our Secretary of State, George Marshall, proposed that we should give aid to the needy Europeans. We started giving food, machinery, and other materials. We are caught in a Cold War with the Russians and we are both going to the edge of war but not actually declaring it (Brinkmanship). The Russians of exploded their bomb the Joe 1. Our beloved Truman desperately wanted to beat the Soviets in an arms race for a new type of bomb.

The dumb Russians got scared and forced Eastern European countries into their Warsaw Pact. Yet they couldn't even get the biggest communist country in the world to join them. The Iron Curtain divides Europe into two sides.

After our complete fail at the Bay of Pigs the Soviets built 42 missile sites. Our JFK ordered them destroyed and but a blockade in between Cuba and the US. Finally the Soviets got smart and destroyed their missiles in Cuba.

As the United States, Britain, and us (Soviet Union) met, it was decided to split Germany into zones that would be appropriately controlled by the Allied military forces. In addition to this, Germany was required to pay the Soviet Union compensation for the loss of lives and properties during the war.

The Marshall Plan was the United State's way of giving money to Western European countries in hopes of preventing the spread of communism. Countries under Soviet domination were not allowed to receive Marshall Plan funds, but were able to receive funds from other government plans.

The 38th parallel was a line crossing in Korea at 38 degrees north latitude where Japanese soldiers surrendered to Soviet forces, however south of this line, Japanese surrendered to American troops leaving a divided Korea. The creation of the Warsaw Pact was in response to the creation of NATO. Egypt had controlled the Suez Canal despite it technically being controlled by the British. Britain then got involved with France and Israel in efforts to retake the canal. However, with much influence from the US and Soviet Union, Israel and the other Europeans left Egypt.

An intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, was used to push Sputnik into orbit. Sputnik was the first unmanned satellite to go beyond earth's atmosphere. The US attempted to invade Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, but since they were unsuccessful it only gave us the confidence to begin secretly building missiles in Cuba. We had built 42 missile sites before US spy planes discovered them.
1964 - 1973

During this time France controlled most of Southeast Asia, however many communist revolts were starting to begin. The US was beginning to get involved in an effort to stop the spread of communism. Communist guerrillas, or Vietcong, were reaching out to countries such us (Soviet Union) and China for help. In the end, US troops were slowly withdrawn from Vietnam but this did not immediately stop all war problems.

Detente was a policy put into place by Richard M. Nixon, in hopes to replace brinkmanship (the willingness to go to the brink of war) and to lesson tensions between the US and USSR after the Cold War.
