There were a few factors that led up to Anh Doh and his family moving to Sydney the factors included financial problem and war. They escaped the demolished Vietnam in 1980 by getting on a small boat in hopes of finding a safe place to live.

Anh Doh stayed in a refugee camp for several months. nGetting out of a refugee camp alone isn’t easy. Having to get out family members and yourself is harder. To get everyone in the family out of the camp. Anh do’s dad wore a high rank uniform and marched him and his family out of the refugee camp however if he had been caught there could have been a life long punishment that resulted in death.

The journey lasted a long 5 days. 5 days with no food. 5 days on a rusty old fishing boat. 5 days squished with 47 other refugees. 5 days with 2 pirate attacks. It was not an easy journey.

After 5 days at sea on a rusty fishing boat crammed with 47 other refugees with no food or water and after being attacked by 2 pirate gangs Anh do and his family finally arrived at Australia. Anh do and his family were lost not know where to go or what to do. Thankfully 2 nuns gave them 2 bags of clothing in exchange for nothing.

Despite many ups and downs Anh Doh released his first book (the happiest refugee) in 2010. The books was about Anh Dohs personal refugee journey from Vietnam to Australia.

Not long after Anh Dohs book was published (2011). He won 2 awards including Best Newcomer, Best book of the year, Independent Booksellers Book Of The Year and Biography of the Year. All these awards were for The Happiest Refugee.
