Orina Paley, Kate's mother is descended from Vladimir Paley. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Pavlovich_Paley
As a soldier in WWI, he caught the eye of an unknown Silver Fang serving as a nurse on the Russian front. She bore a son, Cristof, put him in the care of Kinfolk and disappeared back into the war, presumably dying in a blast that took out the aid station at her last known whereabouts. The Kinfolk maintained contact with Vladimir as the vanished Silver Fang's family and were arranging for him to take in his son when he was placed under house arrest in 1917. The Kinfolk wisely waited and when he was arrested in 1918 by the Bolsheviks, those Kinfolk hid the son. When Vladimir's sisters and mother were safe in France, that son was brought to them. Fearful for him after loosing the rest of their male relatives, they kept close-mouthed about him, calling him Christopher, and history did not mark him. When his aunt, Natalia Paley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalia_Paley), moved to New York he accompanied her. He wed a New York socialite and named his daughter Orina in honor of his Aunt Irina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irina_Pavlovna_Paley.)
