Oregon Trail

1840

Settlers begin moving along the Oregon Trail and through Sioux territory in the Platte River Valley. This decades marks the start of frequent contact between Indians and whites.

Soldiers Enter Platte River Valley

1845

Due to violence between tribes and towards settlers, US soldiers take presence in the Platte River Valley.

Government establishes Fort Laramie

1849

First military base established on Lakota Land.

Indian Appropriation Act

1851

Government's first attempt to place well defined boundaries on American Indians.

Peace Policy

1869

Policy signed into law by President Ulysses Grant--- assigned several Christian denominations to each Indian reservation.

Court of Indian Offenses

1883

Law prohibits all American Indian ceremonial dances.

Wovoka's Ghost Dance

1890

An Indian prophet named Wovoka, begins a new Ghost Dance Movement which is widespread amongst Native Americans.

Wounded Knee Massacre
