Germany attacks the Soviet Union

Up until this point, the Soviets and the Germans have kept the peace. They split Poland and did not have anything else to do with each other. This is the turning of the War... The Soviets are able to hold off Germany even though the Axis Powers have taken over most of Europe.

Japan bombs Pearl Harbor (U.S. Naval Base)

This event throws the U.S. into War

The U.S. declares war on Japan (along with Britain)

Germany and Italy declare ware against the U.S.

The draft is put into place one week later calling for help from men against the germans.

Benito Mussolini (Italy) is dismissed by King Victor Emmanuel and is arrested.

He later tries to escape to Switzerland with his mistress.

Italy agrees to Peace talks with the Allies

D-Day

Invasion of the Beaches of Normandy to help free France and Belgium. Invasion was led by Dwight D. Eisenhower.

FDR dies and Harry Truman (VP) takes over as President

Mussolini is captured and shot

Hitler commits suicide in his underground bunker

Within a week all German soldiers and generals surrender.

United Nations charter is signed

06/26/1945

The United Nations is the agreement between many nations to never go to war again. All countries agree to try and talk peace prior to any war. All also agree that if one country is invaded all countries will help in the fight.

Atomic bomb dropeed on Hiroshima, Japan

08/05/1945

Japan refused to surrender so the U.S. dropped an atomic (nuclear) bomb on the city. This is the first nuclear weapon to be used in war. No other country in history has used nuclear weapons for war.

Atomic bomb is droppe on Nagasaki, Japan

08/09/1945

After the first nuclear bomb, Japan still refused to surrender. The second bomb was dropped as revenge for Pearl Harbor.
