The games center around a player living in a village with anthropomorphic inhabitants. It was later released in the North America, Australia, and the EU. The next release was Wild World in 2005. There are five main games—City Folk (2008), New Leaf (2012), and the most recent New Horizons (2020). The series is very popular amongst teenagers and young adults, spurring multiple spin-off games, including a mobile-friendly spin-off called Pocket Camp in 2017 for Apple and Android users. The games’ appeal is that they allow players to have control over how their world looks, unlike real life. Its success also spurred a movie release, and characters are featured in other game such as Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Mario Kart 8. WarioWare: Smooth Moves also features mini games based off the series.
