US imposes a puppet government, electing Adolofo Diaz.

Chamarro allows the US to build a canal across Nicaraguan territory for $3 million. There is guerilla rebellion due to this Treaty.

Somozo Regime

The Somozo family takes over for a reign that lasts 52 years transferring from Father to son. This is a time of unrest and uneasiness as Nicaragua oppositioners are faced with death squads supported by the US CIA.

Daniel Ortega cuts social programs. Hurricane Hugo devastes Nicaragua leaving it in even a worse state.

Conservative Party elects Arnoldo. He tries to reinstate social programs and order.

Somozo assassinates Sandino

Somozo with the help of US ambassador plans and succeeds in the assasination against of Augusto Sandino who opposed US influence in Nicaragua.

Anastasia Somozo is assassinated.

01/01/1956 - 12/31/1956

Anastasia Somozo is assassinated and the reign of terror continues with his son. He uses the National Guard to silence his opposition.

Somozo resigns and flees to Miami

01/01/1979 - 12/31/1979

Somozo is assassinated in Paraguay.
