1000 - 1901

The Mossi kingdom gains dominance, until the French take over in 1901

1300 - 2000

The Islams arrive in the region.

The Kingdom of Ouagadougo

1500 - 1800

The kingdom of Ouagadougo was part of the Mossi empire, then fell due to the war that rose inside of their own kingdom.

Samori Ture The Warlord

1800 - 1960

The Samori Ture ( The Warlord) was forced by the French to tell the people of the lost Ouagadougo kingdom to announce that the kingdom was now part of French West Africa.

Upper Volta

1800 - 1960

Upper Volta (Ouagadougo Kingdom) gained independence from the French.

Meningitis Outbreak #1

1858 - 1871

This Meningitits outbreak was terrible for the people of Upper Volta because the disease wiped out 1,500 people in a short period of time.

The Battle

1890 - 1901

The Mossi kingdom tries to defend itself against The French froces, until they are finally won over in1901

Burkina Faso

1900 - 1960

Upper Volta was renamed Burkina Faso in 1960.

Upper Volta and the president

1960 - 1967

With Upper Volta free of the French they elect president Maurice Yameogo.

The Prime Minister

1971 - 1974

Gérard Kango Ouedraogo becomes the prime minister, until Abubakar Sangoulé Lamizana returns the power back to the military government.

Democratic Reforms

1990 - 2013

Burkina Faso is introduced to limites Democratic Reforms.


1999 - 2000

Francois Compaoré, President Blaise Compaoré's brother, charged with murder. The charges are dropped after an appeal to a military tribunal

Meningitis Outbreak

2006 - 2009

The Outbreak kills another 630 people.

Women In Office


A law was passed that states that at least 30% canidates that are put forward for election must be women.



France and The U.S issue travel warnings, because of the siting possiblities of kiddnapping by al- Qaeda operatives.
