DESCRIPTION: The Missouri Compromise was a law that admitted Missouri into the Union as a slave state. It also admitted Maine into the Union as a free state. This kept the balance of the number of slave and free states in the U.S. The Missouri Compromise would remain stable for a little over 30 years, repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska act in 1954.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: In all, Northerners did not like the Missouri Compromise, as it expanded slavery into new territory. They did not like nor want slavery, and were trying to abolish it. Another reason why the Northerners objected the Missouri compromise was because they were trying to convince congress to start making laws concerning slavery.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: For the Southerners, some supported and some opposed the Missouri Compromise. Southerners supported and opposed the Missouri Compromise. Some Southerners supported the Missouri Compromise because another slave territory was added into the union, that state being Missouri. The southerners wanted slavery. Some Southerners opposed slavery because they thought the Missouri Compromise was a pathway into Congress making new laws concerning slavery,. and maybe abolishing it.

SUMMARY: The Annexation of Texas was the addition of Texas into the United States of America. It was later admitted into the Union as the 28th state. This is important because the Annexation of Texas caused diplomatic relations for the most part to stop between U.S and Mexico.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Northerners did not like the Annexation of Texas. This is because they were scared that the slavery in Texas could be a bad this. They thought that it would tip the uneasy balance of the senate in favor of the slave states, and that could cause a war with Mexico.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Southerners supported the Annexation of Texas because adding Texas as a slave state would balance the slave to free state ratio. The South also wanted to Annex Texas so that they could add another slave state to the Union, and they wanted slavery.

SUMMARY: The Compromise of 1850 was passed by the Unites States Congress in 1850. They were five different bills, and they attempted to resolve slavs disputes. These disputes had to do with new territories being added to the Unites States, and whether or not that state shall be free or have slaves. It basically admitted California in as a free state, and then gave Utah and New Mexico the decision of wanting to be slave states or free states. It also made it easier for slave owners to recover escaped slaves. This compromise kind of failed, as it still left the issue of slavery unsettled.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE:The Northerners we’re fine with the law and mainly agreed with it. They received the most benefits, including adding California as a free state, and who wouldn’t like that. Also the balance of the Senate was now with the free states, and the north liked it. That was important because they could now get what they want on many debates between the two sides.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Southerners did not necessarily love it or hate it. They liked the Compromise of 1850 because there were no restrictions in terms of slavery for two new states, Utah and New Mexico. They also liked it because slavery was maintained in the nations capital, Washington, d.c. The Southerners did not like it however because another free state was added into the union, that being California. The compromise was also a lead on abolishing slavery, something the Southerners were not happy about. Slaves made up most of their economy, and they would not succeed without them.

SUMMARY: The Kansas-Nebraska act was passed on May 30, 1854, by the U.S Congress. It gave people from the two states Nebraska and Kansas to decide between themselves if the wanted to be slave states or free states. Kansas decided to be admitted as a free state in 1861, only a bit after eight Southern states seceded. This act also repealed The Missouri Compromise.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Northerners did not like the Kansas-Nebraska Act, as it affected them badly. As it abolished the Missouri Compromise, it annoyed many people that had once considered the Missouri Compromise to be a important and long-standing agreement. What the Northerners did get out of the Kansas-Nebraska Act was a new free territory, that being Kansas.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Southerners strongly supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This was because they thought that granting popular Sovereignty would allow slavery in these territories. The only thing they didn’t like was that this cause more and more tension between the North and the South, which was known as the ‘Kansas Bleeding’

SUMMARY: The Dred Scott case was a decade-long debate for freedom by a slave named Dred Scott. The case made its way up the courts, and eventually made it to the Supreme court. The case was debating the fact of whether when his owner took him to a free state, should he of gained his freedom while there. The decision was made that having lived in a different free state would not entitle him to his freedom. The also decided that as he was not a citizen, he could not sue in federal court.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Northerners were not at all happy with the Dred Scott case. Firstly they thought it was wrong and unfair. Secondly, they now had evidence that the Southerners wanted to and were trying to extend slavery throughout the whole nation, and rule it.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: In all, the Southerners agreed with the ruling of the Dred Scott case. As he was a slave, they considered him to have no rights. They needed to work for their masters in harsh conditions. Therefore, they approved the Dred Scott decision and believed that Congress had no right to prohibit slavery in the territories

SUMMARY: John Brown’s raid was when he led a group of 18 men into Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. He wanted to take guns and ammunition from the federal arsenal. He would then give the guns to random slaves all through the Appalachian Mountains. His plan was doomed from the beginning, as he had no food or an escape root.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: Crazily, the Northerners were fine with John Brown’s raid. They recognized that it was all from the work or a madman, but they acknowledged and recognized the courage and zeal that it took him. The newspapers had a field day talking about him, and he was greatly appreciated.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Southerners were outraged and shocked. They thought, “ How could anyone be sympathetic to a psychotic man that destroyed tons of their property and threatened all of their lives?” They were also mad that they were under a government that thought of John Brown’s raid as being “ not so bad”?

SUMMARY: Abraham Lincoln was a Republican that was elected as a president on November 6, 1860. His election was the start of many chain events eventually causing the Civil war. The election was very weird in many ways, one of them being that even though he was elected, none of the Southern state voted for him. In fact, Abe Lincoln was not even on the ballet in the Southern states!
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Northerners loved Abe Lincoln, and almost all of them wanted him to be president. This was because he sought to abolish slavery, and most of the Northerners also did. He also wanted to reconstruct the North, and make it the best that he possibly could.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Southerners were not at all happy with the election of Abe Lincoln. Firstly, Abraham Lincoln was not even on their voting ballot, and they had no clue how he had won. Secondly, he sought to destroy the South and abolish slavery, even though the Southerners wanted slavery.

SUMMARY: On November 10, 1860, the South people
of South Carolina wanted to secede. The main reason for this was because of Abraham Lincoln’s election. This enraged the southerners, as he wanted to abolish slavery. They also thought that their last chances at keeping slavery were gone, making them hopeless.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: To the Northerners, this was a win. Firstly, the great Abraham Lincoln has been elected, which will be very beneficial to the North. Secondly, Abraham Lincoln did not think they had the right to leave the Union, and was mad. The citizens thought the same, but they were a little worried about what the South could do now.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Southerners were glad about South Carolina seceding, and in fact wanted to
join them. Seeing what South Carolina had done just gave them evidence that they could too. They wanted to start a new nation, destroy the Confederates, defeat the North, and save slavery.

SUMMARY: Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a book published by Harriet Beecher. Stowe. This novel was an anti-slavery book that helped create the political climate for the election of 1860. It also left a huge effect on the way people looked at African Americans and Slavery in general. It is known to have had a huge part in the starting of the Civil War.
NORTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: The Northerners loves this book, and thought it was a great influence. They wanted to abolish slavery, and now with Abraham Lincoln as their president AND this anti-slavery book, they may actually be able to abolish slavery. They hoped that this book would change the mind of some Southerners who thought slavery was a good idea, and wanted the whole nation like that.
SOUTHERNERS PERSPECTIVE: Safe to say, the Southerners hated this book. This was because the South wanted slavery, and this book was trying to convince people to abolish it. They also did not like it because it increased the differences between the two sides, sparking the Civil War. With opposition to slavery increasing, slave owners in the South worked even harder to defend their right at slavery.
