Scott v. Sanford


On march 4th 1857, a black man, named Dred Scott sued his wealthy owner John F. A. Sanford. In 1863 Scott Emerson ( dred scotts owner) was ordered by the military to go north for the war. A while after in the north Emerson was then ordered to go back down south. Dried Scott had gotten married while in the north so, Emerson decided to go back by himself and left Scott in the north. After a while Dred Scott went back south to be with Emerson. Once he was back with Emerson, Emerson started to treat Scott like a slave again. This is when Scott sued Emerson for his freedom that he already thought he had, but he lost. Also resulting from this case was the idea that slaves were not concidered to be real American people, also the Missouri compromise was overturned.


Lincoln Election


On November 6th 1860 president Abraham Lincoln was elected ino office. He was the first president to come from the Republican Party.


Lincoln's Inauguration


On March 4th 1861, president Abraham Lincoln gave his first inaugural speech to America. The speech was directed toward the south, and stated his intended policies and desires toward the south.

Battle of Fort Sumpter / Start of Civil War


On April 4th 1861, The the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter took place near Charleston, South Carolina.This was the official start of the civil war.

First Battle of Bull Run


The First Battle of Bull Run, also known as the First Manassas was fought on July 21st 1861. It took place in Prince Willam Country, Virginia, near the city of Manassas. This was the first major land battle of the American Civil War.

Port Royal


Captain Samuel F. Donpots silenced the confederate gun fire at fort walker and fort Beauregard on November 7th 1861. These victorious allowed captain Samuel to control all of the islands around the Carolinas.


Battle of Iron-Clads


On March 9th 1862, the first battle naval battle between reinforced iron steam frigates took place. The battle was between the USS Virginia, and the USS Monitor. The battle took four hours and ended with a draw, because neither of the ships were able to penetrate the iron shell of the ship.


4-6-1862 - 4-7-1862

The battle of Shiloh was one of the major battles that took place in the western theater, of the American civil war. This battle was also known as the battle of Pittsburg landing, and was started on April 6th 1862 and ended on April 7th 1862.

Battle of Antietam


The battle of Antietam, also known as the battle of Sharpsburg was fought on September 17th 1862, near Sharpsburg Maryland. This was the first major land battle of the American civil war that took place on union soil. The battle was also the bloodiest single-day battle in American history.


Emancipation Proclamation


Issued on January 1st 1863, the emancipation proclamation proclaimed that all those enslaved in the confederate territory to be forever free. It also ordered the army to treat all those enslaved as free. It was based on the presidents constitutional authority as commander and chief of the armed forces; it was not a law passed by congress.

Battle of Gettysburg

7-1-1863 - 7-3-1863

The battle of gettsyburg was fought on July 1st - the 3rd, near the town of Gettysburg Pennsylvania. It was the war that had the most casualties, and was also the turning point in the civil war.

New York Draft Riots

7-13-1863 - 7-16-1863

These New York City draft riots were violent disturbances that were the culmination of working class that are discontent with new laws passed by congress. These riots were the largest civil insurrection in u.s. history.

54th Massachusetts Attacks Fort Wagner


On July 18th 1863 the Massachusetts 54th regiment attacked fort Wagner. They were the first black regiment to come from the north at the time. This was the second attack on the fort.


Grant Named General-in-Chief


On March 2nd 1864 Ulysses S. Grant was named General and chief of the armies in America. This was after Grant had been elevated to lieutenant by Abraham Lincoln.

june 1864 - April 1865

This was a plan to made by Grant to try to get Petersburg. He wanted to go below Richmond and then attack the confederates from the south.

Sherman's March to the SEA

11-15-1864 - 12-21-1864

Starting on November 15th 1864 General Sherman started his march out of the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia. This was only the beginning of Sherman's union troops march to port savanna. The March finally ended on December 21st 1864, when Sherman's troops captured the port.


Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address


On March 4th 1865, president Abraham Lincoln was elected into office for a second time. This inaugural address was nit talking of happiness it was talking of sadness because of all that had happened during the civil war.

Battle of Appomattox Court House


On April 9th 1865, there was a battle at Appomattox court house this was the last engagement of the confederate states army before surrendering to the union army. The union army that surrounded the confederate troops was led by General Ulysses S. Grant.

Lincoln's Assassination


On April 14th 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilks Booth. The event happened on a good Friday as the civil war was coming to a close. Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head while he was watching a play at Ford's theater.
