The Missouri compromise was when the government in 1820 had made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state, making this law had failed to ease the tension between the slavery issue. The northerners and the southerners didn’t like this because both sides had wanted different things, but not one choice could be settled between each other.

The Annexation of Texas was when the Republic of Texas had become included in the United States, on December 29, 1845, and Texas had officially become the 28th state of America. Many of the Southerners had been wanting to annex Texas into their country because they thought this would bring more slavery, but the Northerners weren’t as fond of the annexation because they were against slavery and wanted colored people to be free.

The Compromise of 1850, was when the United States had passed five bills, in September 1850, which had caused a less political confrontation between slave states and slave-free states during the Mexican-American war. The southerners did not like the Compromise of 1850, because during that time they had banned slavery, made California a free state, and the slave trade was banned, but the Northerners were happy with it because they wanted slavery to end.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It had achieved popularity of whites in the North by dramatizing the experience of slavery. It was the best selling novel in the 19th century and 300,000 copies were sold in the United States. Stowe knew most Northerners had never witnessed slavery first hand and he knew northerners didn't actually know how brutal slavery was. The northerners fell in love with the novel. The south felt deeply offended by this novel because "it condemned Southern society and culture as well as slavery."

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an organic act that created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. It was drafted by Stephen A. Douglas. It was effective on May 20, 1854. this act allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Kansas-Nebraska Act sent eh nation into the Civil War. The North was now open to popular sovereignty. This made the north outraged. Southerners actually wanted to stop the spread of slavery in that region.

The Dred Scott Court Case, was an important case about the decision if colored people should have freedom and rights, which had included Dred Scott, whose owners had taken him to a slave-free state, coming from a slave state. He had brought this to court claiming that he had been brought into a slave-free territory, so he should be free. He had to appeal to the court and this made the decision that colored people would not have freedom and rights. Southerners liked this because they liked slavery and they wanted it to happen, but the northerners didn’t feel the same because they wanted more freedom for them and they wanted them to be free, but Dred Scott not winning the case didn’t help with that.

John Brown was an American abolitionist who led a small group of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas crisis of 1856. He raided Harpers Ferry to get into a federal arsenal in 1859. He led 5 African American men with him. After killing 18 men, he was captured and killed. The North saw Brown as a hero and admired him because of his bravery while the south was unhappy when he was raiding the area, but happy once he was captured and killed. The south did not believe in Brown's ideas as the North did.

In 1860, Lincoln was nominated by the Republican National Convention. When the elections started, he received 40 percent of the popular vote. He defeated all candidates then faced off Douglas in November of 1860. He won and was the first Republican to win the presidency. The south was mad because Lincoln was one who did not believe in slavery. Lincoln freed slaves making the south end very upset. The northerners, on the other hand, believed in Lincoln's ideas and wanted them to continue. They had the same ideas about slavery as he did.

The Secession of South Carolina, was when South Carolina had left the Union, and it was the first slave state in the south to have seceded from the United States. In November of 1860, the assembly called for a convention for the people of South Carolina to meet about seceding from the United States. The North did not approve of this because the south wanted to preserve the institution of slavery while the south wanted this to happen because they believed in slavery and wanted it to continue.
