SUMMARY: This was an agreement that maintained balance on slavery. It stated that for every slave state, there was a free state. They also drew a line across the Louisiana territory all states north of the line were slave free and all of the states below the line were not.
NORTHERN: The northerns were upset because this meant that there was one more slave state that free state. The north also wanted no slavery all together so they were upset that they brought more slave states
SOUTHERN: The south was very pleased with the Missouri compromise because it changed the balance to make it more equal for both slave and anti-slave state’s.

The Annexation of Texas is when Texas joined the United States after leaving Mexico nine years earlier in 1836. This made the country of Mexico very mad and it contributed to the Mexican war.
NORTHERN: The northerns were made because it became another slave state. They were also mad because this started up the MExican war
SOUTHERN: The southern states were happy because this meant there would be another slave state and more votes in elections that are on their side. This also meant that there was more people that could move there and have new territories.

This compromise was an agreement that settled the argument of having slavery in the new land or not. California also joined the union as a free state. Slavery was made optional in the new territory. Both sides benefited from this.
NORTHERNERS: The north was happy because they gained another free state (California). They lost Texas in the process but they got 10 million dollars to pay off debt.
SOUTHERNERS: the south liked the compromised of 1850 because this allowed fugitive slave law and New Mexico and Utah territories could decide if they wanted slavery or not.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It dramatized slavery and was very popular in the north.
NORTH: This was better for the northern perspective because they had never gotten a first hand perspective of slavery. This helped people understand things a lot better.
SOUTH: The south did not like the uncle toms cabin because it made the northerners realize how unjust slavery increasing opposition against slavery which made the southerners feel threatened

this act proposed that the Nebraska territory would be divided into two different states, Kansas and Nebraska. Each territory would decide about slavery through popular sovereignty. This bill was passed, proslavery and antislavery forces started to try and control the new territory.
NORTH: They did not like the Kansas Nebraska act because this allowed Kansas and Nebraska to open slavery. The Missouri compromise of 1820 kept this from happening until now.
SOUTH: The south supported the Kansas-Nebraska act because the act aloud Kansas and Nebraska to choose based off popularity if there was slavery or not so the south thought they could get slavery in those states because of granting popular sovereignty.

This was a court case that was seen by the US supreme court. Dred Scott was a slave that was taken into free territory. His wanted to be considered a free citizen. According to the ruling of the court, he was not able to be considered a citizen.
NORTH: They did not like the outcome of the Dred Scott case because they think that he should be free since he was brought in to a free state. This also showed that the south was getting closer to having the whole country allowing slaves if they can't get freed from entering free states.
October 16, 1859 - October 18, 1859

John Brown, an abolitionist, tried to raid in Harpers Ferry, Virginia because he wanted to end slavery. He wanted to get revenge. At the scene of the raid, he was captured and many other people that were with him were also captured. John Brown was later killed as a result of it.
NORTH: The north supported this and liked the idea behind it (to end slavery). Some people in the North saw him as a figure who died for his beliefs.

Abraham Lincoln was representing the Republican party in the election of 1860. He had 17 more electoral votes than needed. The strange thing about this election was that he was not on the ballot for some southern states and he still won the election.
NORTH: The north was happy about this because he wanted to end slavery. His opposition of slavery was the main reason why he was elected. Even though he was against the souths beliefs, he still wanted to stay as one country.

This is when South Carolina became the first slave state to not be a part of the United States. James Buchanan (the president at the time) said that this secession was illegal. He did nothing to stop it.
NORTH: Northerners did not like the south seceding because it meant that they couldn't have as much control over them anymore. This also meant that there was about to be a war if more states seceded
SOUTH: The south was happy because this meant that they were going to be allowed to have slaves freely. They were also worried about a war but they were happy that they seceded.
