The compromise of 1850 was a compromise that defused the secession situation regarding the south. It had something to do with the north and south being split on the problem with land that had been acquired from the war with Mexico. This compromise took place in Washington Dc. This increased tensions between the north and south due to the fact that this issue arises because of the issue with slave states and free states with the North and south. It would have made more tension because even with the compromise it could leave some people in both the north and south unhappy.

Being apart of the compromise of 1850, this act was a statement saying that run-away slaves that came to the north had to be returned to the south despite being in a free state. This act was passed September 18,1850. The north opposed this because of them thinking that the south were trying to spread slavery throughout using federal coercion. All of the conflict between the north and south is making more reason towards war because of the north being upset and the south being upset if the slaves weren't returned.

The underground railroad was a mix of routes and safehouses used to help slaves escape. These secret routes and safehouses went north, there were states that were free like Pennsylvania,NJ, and Ohio were some escaped slaves would go but slaves also went to Canada. Other escaped slaves that were called “conductors” would help other slaves try to get to safety. This could cause tension between the north and south due to the Fugitive Slave act not being fulfilled. With this act not being in affect it caused tension between the north and south because the south was losing profit and becoming angry with the North because of this.

Uncle Tom’s cabin was a very important and popular book that was anti-slavery. This book was also written by Harriet beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, this book helped the north be more against slavery. It also helped increased tension leading towards the civil war because the purpose of the book was to encourage people to look at what slavery really was.

Bleeding kansas was multiple civil altercations that started in 1854 that stemmed from politcal debated over slavery in Kansas. The term “border ruffians” tried to empahize pro-slavery. This contributed to war between the north and south due to the new Republican party. It's also argued as the first battle in the civil war as well.

This act was an act that promoted popular sovernigty by allowing people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they want slavery or not. This act would repeal the Missouri Compromise line and that caused tension. If this line was repealed this would cause an uproar and slavery would expand drastically, and that would bring war.

On May 22, 1856 a man by the name of preston brooks beats Charles sumner unconscious with his cane. This act of volence commited by a pro-slavery democrat toward a abolitoinist. It helped with polzaring the issue of slavery a little bit more and the act itself was contributing to the war because of the two sides of the men being abolitionist and pro-slavery.

The Dred Scott Decision consisted of the supreme court decision of 3 things being; African americans weren't citizens, they couldnt sue in federal courts, and because theyre property, they can be taken into any territory and held there in slavery. This was a huge issue that happened in 1857 because of slavery. This angered many slaves because of the things that they ruled during his case.

The significance between the debates that Lincoln and Douglas had was douglas having to defend popular sovereignty when it came to slavery. The main signifance in regards to douglas’ argument was that the issue was with slavery expanding into territories; hence why he favored popular sovereignty. With douglas’ opinoiun on slavery, it caused the south to oppose him, and this and other events eventually led to the southern seccession becoming more and more likely to take place.

John brown being an abolitionist led a group to raid a federal amory in attempt to try and end the instution of slavery. This resulted in the hanging of Brown for murder and treason. This attempt at an slavery uprising caused more tension because it encouraged slaves to rebel and it attracted slaves to his cause. It would bring tension because this caused issues with slave owners and slaves in the south.
