After Napoleon lost interest in the New World, France offered Americans the Louisiana Territory for 15 million USD. Thomas Jefferson took the offer, doubling the size of the United States westward. It also resulted in partition of land through the Missouri Compromise.

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was passed by Congress and created a boundary at the latitude 36°30' where south of it was reserved for slave states and north of it was for free states. Since there was more land northwards, there was opportunity to create more free states, which caused debates between Northerners and Southerners. Two new states were also admitted to the union: Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state.

This later led to the Trail of Tears where Native Americans were severely punished and forced to leave their lands.

Undecided territories such as Kansas and Nebraska, above the Missouri Compromise boundary, made slavery possible in the North. This implied the Compromise of 1850 was no longer in effect and Stephen Douglas received backlash from abolitionists who felt betrayed by the approval of the bill.

The North and the South separated due to different ideals. Northerners were industrialized and supported African Americans as citizens. Southerners supported plantations and slavery. There was a civil war between both sides due to these ideals and admission of free states vs. slave states. President Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves. Under the 13th Amendment slavery was abolished.
