This war began in 1846 the US annexed Texas and Mexico challenged our boarder. General Winfield Scott led them in the invasion. The war ended in 1848 with the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

The Free Soil Party was created after the Liberty Party ended after its poor election. The Free Soil party opposed the extension slavery in territories that were not yet in statehood.

This treaty was what ended the Mexican American war, in favor of the United States. This war ended 2 years after it begun.

The Comprimise of 1850 was created and led by Wig leader Henry Clay. This new comprimise includedd a new fugitive slave act giving federal support to slave catchers, to the south. to satisfiy the north, the legislature admitted California to them. This comprimise preserved national unity by accepting once again the stipulation advanced by the south since 1787: no union without slavery.

This act required federal magistrates to determine the status of alleged runaways and denied them a jury trial or even to testify. So if you were a runaway slave from a different state and you helped the slave escape, you would be fined $1,000 and six months in jail.

This act was passed on May 30th, 1854. This act allowed the people that lived in the two states to decide wether or not they wanted slavery within the boarders. This act went agaisnt the Missuori Comprimise of 1820.

Sumner was giving an anti slavery speech in 1856 to congress. He ended up bashing Butler of South Carolina. After the fact, his nephew beat Sumner up with a cane. This ended up making the gap between the north and south bigger.

During this election, the Republicans won the votes of many Know-Nothings by demanding legislation banning foreign immigrants and imposting high tarrifs on foreighn manufactures. Buchanan ended up winning with 1.8 million popular votes and 174 electoral votes.

In 1857, Dred scott was an enslaved African American who had lived for a time with his owner, an army surgeon, in the free state of Illinois and Fort Snelling in the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase where the Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery. Scott claimed that residence in a free state anda free territory had made him free. Scott then argued that his time spent in these locations entitled him to emancipation. Seven of the nine justices declared that Scott was still a slave, but they disagreed on the legal rationale.

Abraham Lincoln was elected president! He was the 16th president of the United States. Later on, Lincoln began to fight for slavery rights.
