In 1850 and 1753, the U.S. Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act. The act stated that any person(s) who assisted in the escape of runaway slaves were to be sentenced with six months of jail time along with a $1000 fine.

The Dred Scott Decision is when a slave by the name of Dred Scott sued for freedom while on a trip to Illinois. In Illinois, slavery was illegal; therefore, Scott believed they would vote in favor of his freedom. The case increased the tension between the northern states and the Southern states. The Southern states were thrilled by this verdict, whereas the Northerner felt that the court who made this decision was unfit.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was created to give the U.S. Mexico's Northern Lands. The Mexicans did not sign this treaty willingly, seeing as they did want to give their land to the U.S. however, this did not stop the U.S., who ended up forcing Mexico to sign the treaty.

The Underground Railroad was a haven for African Americans seeking freedom from a life of slavery. Many people of all different races provided these escaped slaves with a place to stay and food. Harriet Tubmen used the Underground Railroad to save nearly three hundred slaves. Many people like her were able to help rescue and rehabilitate escaped slaves.

The book described slavery in the South and showed threaders what horrible conditions slaves had to live under, which gave people more insight into the life of a slave. Harriet Beecher Stowe was the author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin."

Bleeding Kansas accrued because of the tension between the Northerners and the Southerners, Northerners wished to end slavery. After many years of battling the Southerners, they were fed up and wanted slavery to stop, no matter what. Bleeding Kansas was a series of battles in Kansas between those who supported slavery and those who wanted to abolish slavery.

1854 was the year of the Republican Party. The U.S. Citizens highly liked the Party because of its support of the abolishment of slavery. When Abraham Lincoln was elected, he was widely wanted because he supported the Republican Party.

The Republican Abraham Lincon won, which changed history forever because he would go on to issue the emancipation proclamation.
