The purpose for debates was to guarantee win for the control of the Illinois legislature

Denmark Vesey Slave revolt

This rebellion, which was supposed to take place in South Carolina, was ended before the uprising even took place/ Denmark, with many others, were executed

This was an abolitionist newspaper which help contribute to the thought of eliminating slavery/ "immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves''

Nat Turner's Revolt

Over 70 enslaved and free blacks murdered 55-60 slave owners and their families in Southampton, Virginia

Frederick Douglass' Autobiography

1845

Held to be the most famous of the number of narratives written by former slaves during that time period

Uncle Tom's Cabin

1852

Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, This novel was to support anti-slavery. This basically gave the readers an understanding of the horrific side of slavery.

John Brown's Raid

This raid was led by abolitionist John Brown. [Attempted to seize a U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry]
