Belgians divide Rwanda

1933

The Belgians, who had control of Rwanda during this time, divide to ethnically divide Rwanda. Rwanda has 2 main ethnic groups, the Hutu and Tutsi, and the Belgians favor the Tutsi, giving them the better jobs and opportunities

Hutu Rebillion

1959

The Hutu decide that they are fed up with being ethnically divided, and they divide to rebel against the currently-favored Tutsi. 20,000 Tutsi's die as a result of this massacre, and this leads to the Hutus gaining power over Rwanda

Independence

1962

Rwanda gains independence, and the Hutus mostly take over power

Rwanda's Economy plummets

1989

World Coffee prices drop. Coffee was one of Rwanda's main exports, and the price drop causes massive economic struggle all across Rwanda, creating tension among the people

RPF attacks Rwanda

1990

The Tutsi Rebel group, RPF, decides to attack Rwanda. This creates a civil war in Rwanda

President Killed

April 6, 1994

Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana is killed when his plane is shot out of the sky. The Rwandan was one of the main men working towards peace between the Hutus and Tutsis, and his death caused massive outrage, and resulted in the Hutus blaming the Tutsis for the President's death

Massacre of 1994 Starts

April 7, 1994

Hutu Extremists begin killing Tutsis, and this is the start the Genocide. The Death count of the Massacre varies, because of various sources arguing about the actual number of deaths. The death count is said to be at 500,000-1,000,000.

Hutus lose and flee

July 13, 1994

The Hutu extremists are forced to end their genocide against the Tutsi civilians, as the RPF(a Tutsi rebel group) retaliates. The Hutu are pushed out, and they flee to Zaire(current day Democratic republic of Congo)
