The election split into lines of slavery like the Whigs and Democrats. The northern contingent nominated Fremont for the election. The Republicans would win many votes in the north by banning foreign immigrants and imposing high tariffs. In New York they campaigned by uniting all anti slavery, popery, and whiskey voters. The Democrats nominated James Buchanan who would win the election. A North Carolina said that if Fremont had won the states would have separated. Slavery was effecting the elections and wether the United States was going to hold together.
