Manifest Destiny: North and South
Involved: the south and north
People wanted to expand to the Pacific Ocean, and they couldn't decide whether what ideology to spread to the rest of the American land.
This ultimately led to the separation of the North and South and the differences that were seen within these years that lead up to the Civil War.
1846 - 1850

People involved: David Wilmont and the Democratic party.
A piece of legislation that he tried to get passed at the closing of the Mexican War.
It tried to ban all slavery in the territories gained by the war, this caused majors issues in the succession of certain states.

People involved: "Free-soilers"
Soon as the senate rejected the Wilmont Proviso, thousands of northerners took off and joined the free-soil movement. They quickly organized the Free-Soil Party, this party focused on the sinfulness of slavery in the United States. They depicted slavery as a threat to republicanism.

This Act was also a part of the Compromise of 1850, this act made the federal government return all slaves to their owners even if they were in a free state.
This made the federal government become more involved with the topic, and the people did not apprecaite the sides that were being choosen.

Not long after the Wilmont Proviso, this was proposed, it admitted California as a free state. This offered little to help. It only divided the nation even more and caused things to further intensify

This was a novel, in the eyes of slavery in the south.
It opened the eyes of many people and made others shudder in disbelief. It gave the northerns insight on how the slaves were being treated and the southerners protested in disbelief.

Also Known as "Bleeding Kansas"
Kansas and Nebraska were territories set up under the popular sovereignty, where residents had the option to choose whether they were free or enslaved.
People flooded into Kansas, hoping to add to the number of votes to their side of the agrument.
1859

People involved: John Brown and his followers.
Brown was an avid fighter in the south against Slavery.
Upon returning to the north, he and 19 followers went armed with bibles to Virginia to start a rebellion with armed forces, here they grabbed all the firearms that were nearby and gave them to slaves to help fight the cause against slavery.

Lincoln won the election of 1860 with his anti-slavery campaign.
Along with his election, not long after South Carolina succeeded from the Union and soon after six more states followed.
When they succeded from the union they formed their own side, they made the confederacy and this was the two sides that fought at the Civil War.

The beginning of the Civil War! The first shots heard around the nation.
With the succession of many states, Fort Sumter became a foreign territory and Lincoln began to watch it very closely.
On April 12, Lincoln practically forced the south to fire first which, now the Civil War was underway.
