Jamestown was founded the the Virginia Company and was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. When the settlers arrived they faced many challenges. From diseases, such as swellings, fluxes, fevers, starvation and at times war. Luckily, the Powhatan's ,a Native American tribe, provided the English with lots of food that helped them survive. However this help did not last forever. As a result during the winter of 1609-1610 the English ran out of food since they were afraid to leave their fort due to the Powhatan threat. As a result many people passed away. Hence, this period is known as the "Staving Time."
