Kino wakes up and hears the song of the family. He lives in a small hut in La Paz and has a wife named Juana and a child named Coyotito. They don't have much money, but they are happy. His character is satisfied with his simple life as the story begins. He has a healthy family and a home. His happiness is evident on the first morning because the narrator says, "it was very good--Kino closed his eyes again to listen to his music" (1-2).
Coyotito is stung by a scorpion inside the family hut while they are getting ready for the day. Juana sucks out the poison, but all Kino can hear is the song of the enemy. Kino is supposed to be the leader of the family, but his reaction shows that he was not prepared for this to happen. His anger is hinted at by his response to the scorpion sting. He takes the scorpion and bashes it with his foot until there is nothing left. This shows that Kino has moved from content to angry.
Juana says she wants to visit the doctor, so the entire family and many of their neighbors go into town to ask for the Doctor’s help. The doctor lies and says he isn’t there. This section is important because it demonstrates the inequality between the two races. The doctor doesn’t want to help Kino and his men because they have no money. The native people are very poor and the Spanish Mexicans are very wealthy. Kino is greatly angered by the doctor’s refusal to help and hits the gate so hard that his hand bleeds.
Before they go into the ocean, Juana puts seaweed on Coyotito to pull out the poison. Kino is concerned with finding a pearl that is large enough to save his son. He even hears "the melody of the maybe pearl" (18). Kino is still hearing the songs of his people and his connected to his family. He wants to find the pearl for the right reasons and knows that helping Coyotito is all that matters. This is the part of the book before Kino is corrupted by the pearl. After diving for a while, Kino finds a clam that is so large and old that he feels it has something important.
