pair of silver medals in singles and doubles tennis.

At the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Japan
took its first two gold medals, in track and
field, and swimming. Athlete Hitomi Kinue
became the first woman to join a Japanese
Olympic contingent. She received a silver
medal in the 800-meter running event, and
her success encouraged more women to take
up competitive sports.
