Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Hungarian/Austrain Throne. The assissination of Franz Ferdinand was one of the main reasons of the start of WW1.

World War 1 (The Great War)

28 July 1914 - 11 november 1918

WW1 was known as the great war which went for 4 years. Many people died or were seriously injured. During the great war many battles happened that resulted in many dead, wounded or were taken in as casualties. Many weapons and gases were used in the war to win such as machine guns and poisonous gas. Poisonous gas was brought in by the by the Germans and was made very popular. Planes were also used to spy on the enemies and were used in battles. The average lifespan of an active pilot during the war was 17 days.

The battle of frontiers was a series of battles. This war involved the germans against the French, The UK and the belguim. The germans won this war. Many died in this war.

Battle of Tannenburg

The battle of Tannenburg was a battle between the russians and the germans. The Germans won this battle and the battle caused 78,000 people to be killed or wounded.

The battle of marne was fought near the Marne river, paris. The battle was fought between the british, the germans and the french. The battle was won by the germans and it also resulted in over 300,000 people dead.

England and france were allies together against Germany. Fought against the Aisne River France. Many people died. around 15,000 british soldiers died and its unknown how many german and french soldiers died. The battle didnt have a winner it was indecisive.

The first battle of Ypres was also known as the battle of flanders. This battle was the British, belguim and French army against the germans. 300,000 soldiers were either killed, wounded or missing after this event.

Planes were used a lot in WW1. On average a pilots average lifespan was 17 days in action. Planes were also used for spying on other armies, for photography and for dropping bombs and attacks on others.

Poisonous gas was first used by the german empire.

Second Battle of Ypres

22 April 1915 - 25 May 1915

This war was fought between the french, british and their allies against the germans. This war was indecisive and another war was fought later on in the year. In this battle 100,000 soldiers were shot, killed or wounded. the location is Ypres Belguim.

Gallipoli Conflict

April 25 1915 - January 6 1916

The Gallipoli conflict took place in Turkey. it was a war brought on by the australians but resulted in turkey winning. Turkey won because they knew the australians were coming so they prepared by making their base higher up and by preparing to shoot australians as soon as they came to shore. The Gallipoli Conflict went for 9 months. The war ended because Australia retreated as they knew they would never win. it was a hopeless case.

Battle of Verdun

The battle of Verdun was between the french and the germans. The battle of Verdan was fought at Verdun-sur-Meuse, France. This battle was won by the french and was one of the biggest battles of WW1. 500,000+ soldiers were killed in this war.

Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the somme was easily the most famous battle during the first world war. The british army lost 420,000 people as they had become casualties, The french lost 200,000 men and the germans lost 500,000 men.

In this battle the French and allies fought against germans. The Germans won. 10,000+ soldiers were killed, injured or missing.

Tanks were first used at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on September 15,1916. They were first used by the british who started out with 49 tanks.

This battle was between the german/ottoman empire against the british empire. This was a short battle and ended with the Ottoman./german empire winning. This battle was fought at Gaza, southern Palestine.

Battle of Arras

The battle of Arras was fought with the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Newfoundland against the german empire. The germans lost this war. This war was fought near Arras, Belguim and it lost 300,000 soldiers due to the fact they went missing, they were killed or they were injured.

Second Battle of Aisne

16 April 1917 - 9 May 1917

Between the French and German empire. Was fought between Soissons and Reims, France. Many died at almost 300,000 soldiers. The germans won this battle.

Second Battle of Gaza

April 17 1917 - April 19 1917

This battle was fought between the british/french army against the ottoman (turkey) and the german army. The turkish/germans won this war. 1000-2000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing in this war.

Battle of Passchendaele

31 July 1917 - 6 November 1917

The war was the british, Belguim and french together as allies against Germany. 410,000 people died during this battle. Thje location of this war was Passendale Belguim.

Third battle of Gaza

31 October 1917 - 7 November 1917

This battle was won by the british and it was between the british and the germans/turkish empire. Over 50,000 soldiers were killed in this war.

Battle of Lys

7 April 1918 - 29 April 1918

The battle of Lys (also known as the 4th battle of Ypres) was fought between the British Empire, United Kingdom, Australia, Newfoundland, Portugal, Belgium, France, United States against the Germans. Around 250,000 soldiers were killed, injured or missing. Third Battle of Aisne

Fought near the Aisne River France. USA, British and french army fought against the germans. The germans retreated. 130,000 people were recorded dead.

Meusse-Argonne Battle

September 26 1918 - November 11 1918

This battle was the end of all battles and the war. This battle was located at Argonne Forest France and was between the french/USA against the germans. The French and USA won. This is a very important battle as it was one of the final battles of the war.

Fifth Battle of Ypres

This was the final battle of Ypres. This battle was between the United Kingdom, Belgium, French and United States against Germany. The Germans lost this war. over 20,000 soldiers were lost, killed or missing.
