Using popular funk and soul records people enjoyed dancing to. He would stretch out the instrumental break of the song , using two copies of the same song on two turntables, mixing between two records to extend the break.

Breakdance aka B-boying us said to have originated in South Bronx in the mid 70's.
Breakdancing was derived from special dances that would specifically dance to the breaks.
Hence forth, those dancers would become the official/ultimate dance style of hip hop cultures.
