American Dj from the South Bronx, New York who was instrumental in the early development of hip hop through the 1980's. One of the three originators of Breakbeat Dj'ing

City Changes

1959

Park commisioner Robert Moses began building an expressway through the heart of the Bronx. As a result, the middle class italian, german,Irish, and Jewish neighbourhood moved out over night. In addition, businesses and factories relocated out of the borough. These exiting middle class people were replaced with poor black and hispanic families. Accompanying these poor people were crime, drug addiction and unemployment

Jamaican Dub Music

1960

Created by Jamaican DJ's during the 1960's. Trggae records were significantly manipulating and reshaped, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, emphasising drums and bass.
People would "Toast" over this, talking making announcements for example.
Clive campbell would later copy this style using Funk and Solo records of the 1970's

Clive Campbell Comes from Jamaica to Bronx

Clive Campbell Emigrates and is given his nick name hercules, which later changes to DJ Cool Herc

Savage Seven. Start of Gang activity

1968

Start of gang, vandalizing and terrorizing the neighbourhood.
Changed name to Black Spades.
Laid groundwork for a surge of street gang activity that would overwhelm the Bronx for the next 6 years

2nd City Change

1968

Completion of 15,000 apartment block on the northern edge of the Bronx near an expressway accelerated the Bronx middle class exodus from comfortable and well kept apartments.

The large vacancy rate made landlords sell property to professional slum lords. As a consequence of this action the Bronx deteriorated

Rise Of Graffiti

Corner stone of inner city expression.
It was used heavily by gangs as a way to mark territory and communicate.

Hip Hop Started

Started in the Bronx, NY

DJ Herc Pioneers Breakbeat

1973

DJ Herc DJ's his first block party (his sister's birthday) in the bronx, NY.
Using popular funk and soul records people enjoyed dancing to. He would stretch out the instrumental break of the song , using two copies of the same song on two turntables, mixing between two records to extend the break.

Decline of Gang activity

1973

Afrika Bambaataa, became the leader of the black spades, he left to form Zulu Nation (Peaceful) and to become a DJ

Park jams, block parties and clubs were becoming more popular. The beginning of hip hop culture began to form

Start of Break Dancing

1974

Breakdance aka B-boying us said to have originated in South Bronx in the mid 70's.
Breakdancing was derived from special dances that would specifically dance to the breaks.
Hence forth, those dancers would become the official/ultimate dance style of hip hop cultures.
Gang members became dancers.
Battles became Dance offs

Invention of The Scratch

1975

DJ Grand Wizard Theodore accidentally invents "The Scratch" technique (moving a spinning record back and forth) essential today

Kool Herc Forms First MC team

1975

Hired as Dj at Hevalo Club.
Hires Coke La Rock And Klark Kent to rhyme over his instrumental breaks during club sets. This was rap music's first MC team.
They became known as Kool Herc and the Herculoids.
People go to watch them as a band

808 Drum Machine

1978

Roland Creates the 808 Drum Machine. The 808 is the most used Drum machine in history
