Eastern Woodlands

1000 - 1500

The Eastern Woodlands settled by the Atlantic Ocean to the Eastern Great Planes, and from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf of Mexico. This is now the Eastern United States and Canada.

Port Royal

1518 - 1692

A city located in Southeast Asia. Center of shipping commerce.

San Miguel De Gualdape

1526 - 1527

Francisco Gordillo and Pedro de Quexos kidnapped 70 natives, to sell that lived along the Pee Dee River. Explored the coastline until they came to the delaware Bay.

Royal Colony

1600 - 1700

The Roya colony was North Carolina. It was originally part of prvince of Carolina in British America, and created by the eight lords of Proprietor.

Mercantilism

1600 - 1800

Mercantilism was the economic doctrine that goverment controll of foriegn trade is of paramount importance for ensuring the military security of the country, it demands a posative balance of trade. This dominated Western European economic policy.

Triangular Slave Trade

1600 - 1900

The Triangular Slave Trade carried slaves and goods between West Africa, Caribean, the 13 Colonies, Europe, British North America, and New England. Slaves were packed tightly onto slave ships, many slaves died on the way.

13 English Colonies

1607 - 1733

The 13 colonies are made up of Delaware, Pennslyvannia, New Jersey, Georgia, Conneticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. The Revolutionary war took place durring this time.

Slave Codes

1650 - 1833

Laws that kept slaves under controll.

Rice and Indigo Trade

1680 - 1800

Rice and indigo was part of the Triangular Trade. Slaves were used as free labor to help pick the rice.

Abolitionist movement

1700 - 1800

People who were against slavery. The underground railroad was used by abolitionists.

Yemasse War

1715 - 1717

the Yemasse war was between British settlers and various Native american Indian tribes. One of the most transformational conflicts of colonal america.

Plantation System

1730 - 1917

Used slaves for free labor to help pick cash crops. This system was used in the Southern States.

The Stono Rebellion

1739 - 1740

The Stono Rebellion was the largest slave uprising on september 9th 1739. South Carolina Legislator passed the Negro Act of 1740

French and Indian war

1754 - 1763

This war was between the British American Empire and New France. The British won.

Cherokee war

1758 - 1761

Was a war between the British Empire and the Cherokee Indian tribes. This was durring the French and Indian war.

Sugar Act

1764 - 1766

An act passed by the British Parliment. Was made to put taxes on sugar to help pay off the debt of the war.

Regulator movement

1765 - 1771

An unsuccessful north and south Carolina uprising.

Stamp Act

1765 - 1766

Put taxes on imported goods by the British Parliment to help pay off troops stationed in North America after the British victory in the French and Indian war.

Sons of Liberty

1765 - 1773

Group of American Patriots originated from preindependance North American British Colonys. formed to protect the rights of colonists and to go against taxes. Known for the Boston Tea Party.

Denmark Vesey Plot

1767 - 1822

Vesey got arrested before the uprising began. Vesey was a slave who bought his freedom.

Tea Act

1773 - 1861

Act passed by the Parliment of Great Britian. Was to help reduce the surplus of tea in its London ware houses, to help the company survive. The colonists commited the uprising of the Boston Tea Party.

Revolutionary war

1775 - 1783

A war between the thirteen colonies and the Britsh Empire.

Declaration of Independance

1776 - 1777

Announced that the thirteen colonies were independant states and no longer apart of the British Empire. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independance.

South Carolina constitution

1776 - 1777

When South Carolina became Independant.

Articles of Confederation

1777 - 1789

Establishe the US as a confederation of sovereign. Was replaced with the US Constitution.

Battle of Camden

1780 - 1781

Was a major victory for the British. Charles Lord Cornwallis lead the British.

Battle of Kings Mountain

1780 - 1781

Battle took place in York country, Southern Carolina. Patric Ferguson lead the Patriots.

Battle of Cowpens

1781 - 1782

Daniel Morgan lead the Patriots to victory.

Battle of Eutaw Springs

1781 - 1782

Was the last major battle in the South Carolinas.

3/5 Compromise

1787 - 1788

Between the Southern and Noethern states. Took place during the Philidelphia Convention. Three fiths of the slaves would represent perpouses reguarding the distribution of taxes and portion of the members in the House of Represenatives.

Commerce Compromise

1787 - 1788

The Constitution allows the Federal Government to tax imports but not exports. Southerners and Northerners were fighting over the Governments tariffs.

Great Compromise

1787 - 1788

Proposed by James Madison. Was made to guard against tyranny.

Constitution

1787 - 1789

Helps seperate the powers of the branches and to guard against tyranny.

Cotton Gin

1793 - 1794

Was invented by Eli Whitney. Was made to fasten the production of cotton picking.

Embargo Act

1806 - 1808

A law not allowing the trade with any country in particular.

war of 1812

1812 - 1815

Was a war between the US and the British Empire. Inspired the lyrics of our national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner".

William T Sherman

1820 - 1891

Used the strategy "Total war". Was a union army general.

Nullification Controversy

1828 - 1832

The Federal tariffs were going against the constitution within the sovereign boundaries of South Carolina.

Propriety and Colony

1830 - 1831

Propriety and colony is when a colony which one or more indeviduals, remained subject to their parents states sanctions. Remained rights that are today known as the privlege of the state. This was used by Englands colonization and is based on country platine.

Robert Smalls

1839 - 1915

Enslaved African American Who sailed his family to freedom.

Cotton Trade

1850 - 1851

We traded with London. They had to pick pounds to make a profit.

Kansas Nebraska Act

1854 - 1855

Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. The North and South fought over the land becuase the South wanted it to grow more cotton.

Dred Scott Decision

1857 - 1858

Landmark decision by the US Surpreme court. Stated that the African Americans were alowed to be brought back to their plantations if captured.

Election of 1860

1860 - 1861

Abraham Lincoln got election. The Democratic and Republicain parties were made.

Civil war

1861 - 1865

Between the North and Southern states becuase of slavery. The North won

Creation of the confederate states of America

1861 - 1865

Created by secessionists.

"Total war"

1865 - 1866

War strategy used by William T Sherman. Destroys everything in its path.

Lincolns Assassination

1865 - 1866

John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Took place at Good Friday.

Secessionist

1900 - 1999

withdrawing from a union. Four Southern states left the confederacy.

Fort Sumpter

1966 - 1967

The start of the Civil war. Took place at Charleston harbor.
