Battle of Antietam

September 17, 1862

First major battle to take place on Union soil. This is the bloodiest day in US history.

The Emancipation Proclamation

January 1, 1863

Lincoln states that he is going to end slavery in the South, but not in the border states.
This gave the civil war purpose.

Battle of Chancellorsville

May 1, 1863 - May 5, 1863

This is one of General Lee's biggest victories.This caused the Chancellorsville Campaign.

Battle of Vicksburg

May 18, 1863 - July 4, 1863

It took place in Warren County, Mississippi. Its important because the Surrendered-Confederacy split in half.

The Battle at Gettysburg

July 1, 1863 - July 3,1863

This ended Lee's invasion of the North. It had the largest number of causalities in the Civil War.

The Gettysburg Address

November 19,1863

This was a dedication to the soliders who had lost their life at Gettsburg. This gave more purpose
for the North to want to beat the South in the war.

Election of 1864


Lincoln won the election against McClellan. It was important because if McClellan won, then the war
would have ended with a compromise, not a surrender.

13th Amendment

Jan 31, 1865

This abolished slavery in America. This is important because it furthered the purpose of the war for the North.

Surrender at Appomattox

April 9, 1865

Lee surrenders at Appomattox. This is the last battle of the war.

Lincoln's Assassination

April 14, 1865

John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln at the Ford's Theater. This is important because had Lincoln lived, slaves would
have been freed and been equal with whites much sooner
