Brodas sent her to the store to pick up chicken feed. A slave owned by a different owner and his watcher were also there. That slave was caught trying to escape. The slave watcher threw a metal weight at him but missed and hit Harriet instead.

Harriet escapes from the plantation where she was a slave. Her husband, John Tubman, refused to escape with her on the Underground Railroad.
After Harriet's escape from the plantation, John believed Harriet had died and then remarried in 1851. Harriet married a man named Nelson Davies in 1869. They stayed married until Nelson's death in 1888.
She adopts a child
Harriet and Nelson adopt a child and name her Girtie Davies.
