MARIE ANTONETTE

1774

She was married off to Louis XIV at the age of 14 in 1770
Her marriage sealed an alliance between Austria and France
She had no education or experience on her judgement

LOUIS XVI

1774

Louis became king in 1774, he was not prepared to rule. He was not very interested in the government at all.
In the 1770,at the age of 15 louis married 14 year old Marie Antoinette.
The problems Louis inherited were complicated, and too much for one person to handle.

THE DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN

1789

Natural rights: The Declaration opens with the statement that will "set the fourth the nature, inalienable, and sacred rights"of man
Equality with the Declaration recognized the rights of citizens.
The National Assembly passed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and citizen on august 26, 1789.

THE ESTATES GENERAL

1789

The Estates General was where the three estates would get together and vote as a blok on what laws to be passed
Top two estates could always out vote the third even though there were many more people in the third estate because of the blok system
Louis XVI gave The Estates General little power as he did not want to give up his, but not all The Estates General wanted to follow him and have a democratic system in France.

THE ENLIGHTENMENT

1789

The Age of Enlightenment was started by the philosophes in the 18th century
They did not believe in religion and felt science was the answer to human success
The philosophes had influenced many groups in France like the Bourgeoisie and Nobility

THE FALL OF BASTILLE

JULY 14, 1789

July 14, 1789, mob attacked the Bastille prison
Released 7 prisons from the prison
Mob killed the prison governor and paraded his head throughout the streets
Frightened the King, the prison symbolized the monarchy, so the fall of the jail represented the monarchy falling too

THE MARCH ON VERSAILLES

OCTOBER 5,1789

Starts on October 5, 1789
Women got tired of waiting for help with food problems
Young women entered marketplace beating drums, carrying kitchen knives
Marched 22 km to versailles
Attacked the national assembly and other buildings

THE CONSTITUTION OF 1791

1791

Once in paris, the national assembly worked quickly to establish a new constitution
Most of the old system was swept away, all noble titles were declared obsolete
Many aristocrats fled to other countries such as Austria, England and Switzerland

Leader of the reign of terror
Guillotined about 17000-30000 people
His friends began to doubted him, argued with other members
Got arrested and executed by a guillotine too

THE REIGN OF TERROR

1793

In 1793 the Reign of Terror was started and led by Maximilien de Robespierre
The laws were very poorly written and were meant to scare people so they would follow well
People who were speculators or judgemental of this were executed publicly to bring fear to the public.

THE DIRECTORY

1795

The directory gave political power to people to those who owned properties
Only people with property could vote
End the revolutionary war

1795 - 1798

Revolutions are ideal times for soldier with a bit of wit and courage to act
After successful defeat of the royalist in Paris in 1795
Napoleon’s success in Italy were outstanding

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

1796 - 1814

He was a son of an aristocratic, but a poor family
Became an artillery officer when he was 16
Follower of Rousseau and supported French Revolution
He crowned himself as a king in 1804, because he already have the power of dictator
He overthrown the directory
