The Washington Naval Conference

November 21, 1921

The Washington Naval Conference takes place in Washington DC, attended by nine countries. Japan later withdraws from the agreements made.

Mussolini Named Prime Minister of Italy

The Fascists of Italy take control appointing Benito Mussolini as its prime minister.

The Soviet Union Forms

December 30, 1922

Belarus, Russia, South Caucuses, and the Ukraine form the Soviet Union.

Beer Hall Putsch

November 8, 1923

Nazis, led by Hitler try to overthrow the German government but fail, this was known as the Beer Hall Putsch.

Lenin dies

January 21, 1925

Lenin dies, paving the way for Joseph Stalin to takeover as leader of the Soviet Union.

Mein Kampf published

July 18, 1925

Mein Kampf is published. The book is an autobiography written by Adolf Hitler. Mein Kampf reveals the political ideology of Hitler.

French Troops withdraw from Germany

August 18, 1925

The Treaty of Berlin is signed

April 24, 1926

The Soviet Union and Germany sign the Treaty of Berlin, which allow either country to remain neutral if one or the other is attacked by another country.

Death of Zhang Zuolin

June 4, 1928

Japanese assassins cause the death of Manchurian warlord Zhang Zuolin during the Huanggutun Incident. This increased tensions between China and Japan.

Kellog Briand Pact

August 27, 1928

In an attempt to prevent aggressive warfare, the Kellogg-Briand Pact is signed by major powers of the world in Paris. The pact was aimed at preventing the use of force by any one nation against others.

Great Depression begins

October 29, 1929

The stock market crashes causing the banks to close, which effected the whole economy; the Domino Effect. This put the country into a great recession or "Depression" as it was called.

Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany

January 30, 1933

German President Hindenberg appoints Hitler as Chancellor and ousting Von Scleichler.

Enabling Act

March 23, 1933

This gave Hitler absolute power in Germany.

Gestapo Formed

April 26, 1933

The Gestapo is established in Germany to maintain “order” throughout the country and especially during the war. They represent Hitler’s group of enforcers.

Germany leaves the League of Nations

October 19, 1933

Night of the Long Knives

June 30, 1934 - July 2, 1934

Political murders known as Operation Hummingbird, or the Night of the Long Knives, is carried throughout Germany and beyond. The action was seen as a purge against those who would politically oppose the ruling Nazi party.

Germany violates the T.O.V

March 7, 1936

Germany violates come contents of the Treaty of Versailles by militarizing the Rhineland. Under the treaty, Allied forces would occupy the Rhineland for fifteen years.

The Allied and Axis powers are formed

October 26, 1936

The Axis Powers or Axis Alliance is formed. Germany signs a treaty with Italy and Japan. The alliance would later be the main antagonists during WWII.

Hitler Annexes Austria

March 13, 1938

Nazi Germany completes the Annexation or Anschluss of Austria. Austria was the first country to be annexed by Hitler’s Germany.

The Munich Agreement

September 30, 1938

Seen as a way of appeasing Nazi Germany, the Munich Agreement is signed by France, Italy, the UK, and Nazi Germany. The purpose of the agreement was to allow the annexation of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland borders.
