Soviet Spy

1945

Soviet spy __ Igor Gouzenko _ defects to Canada and exposes a Russian spy ring in Canada.

The Creation of the United Nations

June 1945

The United Nations is created in San Francisco. Canada is one of the original members to sign the Charter. The original goal of the UN was to keep the collective security of the world.

NATO

1949

NATO – the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – is created as a military defense alliance because of fears created by the Cold War with Russia and its allies. In response The Eastern Bloc countries sign Warsaw Pact in 1955.

Korea war

1950 - 1953

Korea: Canada sends 27, 000 troops to the Korean War in a United Nations-supported military action. This was peace making_.

Lester Pearson

1952

Lester Pearson becomes Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations.

Suez, Egypt

1956

First U.N. peacekeeping troops, negotiated by Lester Pearson, prevents war.

Nobel Pease Prize

1957

Bosnia and Croatia

1992 - 1995

In 1991, ethnic wars broke out in the former Yugoslavia. By 1992, the war spread to the Republic of Bosnia- Herzegovina, which formed part of Yugoslavia. Bosnia- Herzegovina was inhabited by Croats, Serbs and Muslims.

Somalia

Canada sends soldiers and later police.

Rwanda

1994 - 1995

Rwanda was torn apart by ethnic rivalries. A small number of peacekeepers were sent to stop control the slaughter. The commander found out that they need more peacekeepers so he ask U.N for support but the U.N was unenthusiastic. As a result, the world was horrified to learn of a massive wave of killing in Rwanda, including many women, old people and babies.
