Igor Gouzenko defected to Canada and revealed a Russian spy ring in Canada. Canada first time realized that it had been involved in the Cold War.

Foundation of the United Nations

A military alliance joined by Canada, U.S and other western European countries to oppose USSR and eastern European countries.

Korean Conflict

June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953

Canada sends 27, 000 troops to the Korean War in a United Nations-supported military action.

Lester Pearson becomes Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations.


Suez Crisis

29 October 1956 - 7 November 1956

Pearson prevented the another world war by proposing the U.N to send a peacekeeping force to Egypt to mediate the conflict.

Cuban Missile Crisis

The Canadian government refused to place Canada’s NORAD forces on alert. Nor did it allow U.S planes with atomic weapons to land at Canadian bases. The world nearly fell into another world war.

Vietnam War

Pearson doubted the war and criticized the bombing campaign of North Vietnam in a speech at a university.
