Events

Estate General

1789

The Second Estate forces Louis XVI to call in a meeting which is called the Estate General. The meeting was called in for all three estates to approve a new tax, which was unfair for the Third Estate because their tax had to be 50% of their income.

National Assembly

June 17, 1789

The Third Estate had peasants and bourgeoisie people, and they weren't getting equality because of the tax prices. So, the Third Estate named themselves the National Assembly so that they can pass laws and reform laws for the majority of French people.

Tennis Court Oath

June 20, 1789

The Tennis Court Oath was taken in an indoor tennis court, which the Third Estate were guaranteeing for a new constitution. Moments later the First and Second Estate choose to reform the new constitution and join the Third Estate.

The Fall of the Bastille

July 14, 1789

In July 14 of 1789, the city of Paris was crowded because of the mass of people surrounding Bastille, the Paris prison. These people were infuriated because there were rumors that Louis XVI was going to use a military force to evict the Third Estate. The crowd of angry French citizens attack the building and the officials surrounding it. The Fall of the Bastille was a representation of revolution to the French people.

Great Fear

October 1789

The majority of the French people were terrified and suspicious about the noble because they heard rumors that nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorizes the peasants. Woman were standing up for themselves and their families which seemed for the first time because they went to Versailles and killed some guards and tried to attack the queen of France, Marie Antoinette.

Louis XVI's escape attempt

June 1791

Louis XVI attempts to escape his own country because his family and he himself as a monarch of France wasn't safe from all the protest the civilians had all around France. Louis tries to escape in a horse carriage and gets his whole family to dress up like peasants because they didn't want to get recognized by the most hated and selfish people in France.

Legislative Assembly

September 1791

The National Assembly completed a new constitution, which Louis XVI authorized that there would be a limited constitutional monarchy. And that there would be a legislative body to create laws and approve or reject declarations of war, but the king still had the power to enforce laws.

France v.s Austria & Prussia

April 1792

Overall, everyone was against the royal family and there were revolts against them every time. The other European countries around France were getting suspicious about their people and whether they were going to go against the government or monarch system. In April 1792, the Legislative Assembly approved the war that Austria and Prussia could have against France.

Reign of Terror

1793 - July 28, 1794

Maximilian Robespierre started gaining power over France and he also made a "new beginning" by trying to diminish everything from the past as a "republic of virtue". When Robespierre became leader of the Committee of Public Safety he started dictating France and that period of time was called the 'Reign of Terror'.
Later, Maximilian gets executed because he has sent overwhelming amounts of people to the guillotine and in 1794 he got what he deserved.

Louis XVI is executed

January 21, 1793

Louis XVI gets imprisoned with his family on August 10, 1792 because the Parisians invade France. The family gets split up and later on in January 21, 1793 Louis XVI gets executed by the guillotine.

Napoleon Rules France

1800

The people of France voted for Napoleon as king because they saw his leadership skills when he lead for the army of France. One of Napoleon's strategies was to keep France the same and keep the changes Maximilian had made during his dictatorship and was to set up beneficial tax collections for everyone.

Peace among France

1802

In 1972 Prussia and Austria align together to stop the revolt against the French people and the royal family. And in 1799, Britain, Austria, and Prussia aligned together to take down France, but all of that changed once Napoleon was slowly taking over France in 1802. In 1802, The three European countries, Britain, Austria and Prussia signed a peace agreement towards France.

Battle of Trafalgar

1805

In the Battle of Trafalgar, what Napoleon wanted was to rule all of Europe and some american States and countries because he wasn't satisfied enough to be the king of France. And in order to get that land, he went to naval war with England where the British took their victory.

The Blockade

November 1806

Napoleon was still vengeful towards the British navy, so he prevented trading port to import in Britain by making a blockade. As a response from the British navy, they also blocked the trading imports around France and it worked because their navy was more advanced than the French navy.It didn't last long enough to start another war, which was the Peninsular War in 1808.

The Hundred Days

June 18, 1815

In March of 1814, Napoleon got defeated by Prussia and Russia, so Napoleon surrendered and gave up his throne in April 1814. Then, Louis XVI's brother becomes the new emperor of France and that made the people of France to question themselves if he was going to undo the Revolution's land reforms. Napoleon goes back to France from Elba and he gets lots of praise in March 1, 1815. He becomes king of France again and that's how the Britain shipped Napoleon to St. Helena. Calling this event the Hundred Days.
