Two rail companies started on each side of the country and they built toward each other. One started in Sacramento, CA and the other started in Omaha, NE.

Western Union Railroad

May 10, 1869

Ran from San Jose, CA, to Sacramento, CA to connect the cities with the Transcontinental Railroad

The Santa Fe Extension


Stretched from Atchinson, KS, to Los Angeles, CA.

The Northern Pacific RR


Finished in 1883. It stretched from Lake Superior to Portland, OR.

Southern Pacific


Los Angeless, CA, to New Orleans, LA.

The Great Northern


It ran from St. Paul, MN, to Seattle, WA.
