In 1949 the Soviets were testing their atomic bomb called Joe-1. Stalin liked to call it "first Lighting"
This was a hydrogen bomb, the most powerful weapon ever detonated. The bomb's yield was reduced and provide enough time for the bomber deploying the device to escape it's blast.

We were not the first ones into orbit, the Soviet Unions were. So we knew we had to push back and do something better than that.
In the Gemini program the Americans learned how to change the orbit of a spacecraft, spent time in orbit to learn how the human body would be affected, brought two spacecraft together in space, and also went on the first space walks outside of a space craft.
The amercian were embarssed at the begining of the Space Race. President Kennedy wasn't going to be embarssed, so he went to congress and told them that they need, want, and better have the first man on the moon.
They sent men up to the moon and they successfully landed on the moon and they were there for 3 days.
With the Gemini and Apollo programs the US had taken a huge lead in the Space Race. Which helped them look better and get to the moon first.
This was the satellite name they sent up into space.
The Soviet did land on the moon with a robot called, "Luna 2 spacecraft." They created a lot of robots to send up there but they never could figure out how to land softly. Finally they did with Luna 16 folloed by Luna 20

Sputnik #3 was the size of the moon. It was 5*11 feet and weight a lot!
Both the United States and the Soviet Union were interested in developing intercontinental ballistic missiles. More the Soviets. These missiles would have the ability to hit any location on Earth, but in order to do so they had to exit the atmosphere.

In 1961 the Soviets beat the US to get the first man in orbit.
