Boer's (group of South Africans) fought Britain taking control. Britain claimed they wanted to uphold equal rights for their people in SA, but the SAs felt they were being invaded. They'd also just found mines.
Critisized internationally.
Britain called on Canada to support them. Started sending in Canadian troops. English Canadians wanted this, French Canadians didn't.
Laurier decided to compromise. Offered Canadian volunteers to become part of the British forces. Sent almost 7,300.
Opposition to Laurer's descion was Bourassa.

Canada relied on British Navy to protect coasts. Germany began to expand their naval. Britian launched HMS Dreadnought. Lots of guns and killing thingys. "Macho ship"

Most English Canadians wanted to contribute but many French Canadians wanted their own navy.

Convinced Laurier to give a reciprocity agreement with the States. This reduced tariffs on things from US.
