Timeline of the evolution of the atomic theory (B.C.E)
Democritus (460- 370 B.C.E)
460 B.C.E - 370 B.C.E
Democritus believed that everything composed of atoms are physically indivisible. He also believed that there was space between each atom. Democritus believed that that atoms are indestructible and always will be
Aristotle believed that all things were made of matter. Aristotle believed that organisms of the same species were made of same but different matter. He also believed matter could be broken down into four elements.(Air, Water, Fire and Earth)
Timeline of the evolution of the Atomic Theory (1-2000 C.E)
Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
1642 - 1727
Proposed that there was a mechanical universe.
He also believed that in this universe that there were small solid masses in motion.
He was the one that invented the quantum theory. This also helped Einsteins work.
Hantaro Nagaoka (1865 - 1950)
1865 - 1950
He did not agree with Thomson's model of an atom so he created his own. His model was not very precise but Rutherford and Bohr eventually came along to fix it.
Robert Andrews Millikan (1868 - 1953)
1868 - 1953
Worked on an oil-drop experiment in which they measured the charge on a single electron. His experiment measured the force on tiny charged droplets of oil suspended against gravity between two metal electrodes.
Ernest Rutherford (1871 – 1937)
1871 - 1937
He believed that atoms have their positive charge concentrated in a very small nucleus. The model of the atom was born through his discovery of Rutherford scattering in his gold foil experiment.
Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)
1879 - 1955
Einstein explained the photoelectric effect using quantum mechanics. He also explained Brownian motion which was one of the first demonstrations of the actual existence of atoms. He was most famous for hiss formula E=Mc2
He added to the quantum mechanical model. He also used an sophisticated mathematical equation too calculate of finding the electron.
James Chadwick (1891 - 1974)
1891 - 1974
Refined the concept of the nucleus. Discovered that the nucleus contains neutral particles as well as positive particles.
Satyendra Nath Bose (1894 - 1974)
1894 - 1974
He worked right along side Einstein to discover a subatomic particle called the "boson". It was a state of matter which regarded with the temperature.
Enrico Fermi (1901 - 1954)
1901 - 1954
He was very intelligent person that you could say used science not for the better but for the worse. He developed the nuclear reactor and also worked on the first ever atomic bomb.
Timeline of the evolution of the Atomic theory (Present)
Peter Higgs (1929- Present)
Peter Higgs was the one that was the one that first thought about the god particle. He thought that this particle gave other particles their mass. It wasn't until 2012 when the so called god particle was finally discovered. Research about this particle is still about in the present day.
Alan Guth (1947- Present)
Alan Guth is right now the originator of the inflationary universe theory. This theory mainly means that the universe is endless. It also states that in a matter of about two seconds that the universe is doubling in size.
