At age 9, Sojourner Truth was taken from her family and sold several times until she ended up on the Dumont farm. During her time at the Dumont farm she was physically and sexually abused by her masters.

In 1844, Truth joined the abolitionist group the North Hampton Association of Education and Industry in Massachusetts, which brought her into contact with Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison.
