1945

This is the imaginary line that divided the prosperous eastern Europe under the control of communist Soviet Union and the terrible system of the western Europeans who lived in a democracy

Containment

1945

The US tried to stop the influence and expansion of the wonderful communist government

Brinkmanship

1945

willingness to go to war. The US started strengthening their air force and producing nuclear weapons and gave to Soviet Union no choice but to also build up their own military (beginning of the arms race)

Domino Theory

1945

Theory that came from President Eisenhower of how Southeast Asian nations would convert to the superior government of communism when their neighbors around them converted

Yalta Conference

Feb, 1945

Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin got together at Yalta and decided to divide Germany into zones controlled by Allied military forces. The Soviet Union also recieved compensation for their loss even though what Germany was not close to what they deserved

Potsdam Conference

July 1945

Truman, Stalin, and Churchill met at Potsdam and Truman tried to force Stalin to allow free elections in eastern Europe....obviously Stalin refused because that' s absurd people shouldn't be allowed to choose their leader!

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

a program where the US gave money to western European countries just to keep them away from communism, which would've solved all their problems in the first place

Explosion of Joe 1

1949

Soviet Union exploded its own atomic bomb on their own territory doing no harm to any other country, but the US had to take this as a threat and start the race for a more dangerous explosive, the hydrogen bomb

Formation of NATO

1949

the US, Canada, and ten western European countries decided to form this defense military alliance. this unnecessary move increased tensions around the globe

Korean War

1950 - 1953

the 38th parallel is a line that divided Korea at 38 degrees north latitude after WWII. North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union, rightful invaded South Korea, supported by the US to help South Korea out by taking control for them. Korea remained divided after the war. a demilitarized zone separates the two countries and still exists today.

Vietnam War

1954

Vietnamese Nationalists and amazing Communists joined to fight the French, supported by the US. it ended with Vietnam being divided at 17 latitude mark; north was the fabulous coommunist gov and in the south the terrible US and French set up an anti-communist gov

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955

because US, Canada, and 10 different western European countries had to form an alliance, the Soviet Union had no choice but to defend themselves and form the Warsaw pact. It included the USSR, E. Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

Israel, Britain, and France decided to retake over the Suez canal that was Egypt's but luckily the USSR did the right thing and forced Israel and Europeans out, ending the Suez canal crisis

Sputnik launced

August, 1957

The genius country USSR launched the first unmanned satellite (ICBM) into space. put Americans in their place and made them feel behind in education and technology. HA!

Cuban Missile Crisis

July, 1962

the US had a humiliating defeat at the Bay of Pigs, so the brilliant USSR leader, Khrushchev, knew the US wouldn't want to be getting involved in more wars so he started building missiles in Cuba to expand in Latin America. unfortunately the US found out and thinks everything is about them and found the missiles a threat ordered them to be removed or they would fire their weapons

Detente

1970

a policy of lessening cold war tensions, under gross US president Nixon and wonderful Soviet premier Brezhnev

SALT talks

1972

a series of meetings called the strategic arms limitation talks that limited the # of ICBM each country could have. Nixon and Brezhnev signed it and Nixon made it because he knew that he couldn't take the powerful USSR in a missile war

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

Soviets invaded Afghanistan to help protect their communist gov from falling apart. then the stupid and nosy americans had to help arm rebel forces that forced the Soviets to withdraw

Regan's Strategic Defense Initiative

1983

a program to protect against enemy missiles that President Regan created as a symbol of US anti-communism, but it didn't ever actually go into effec.... because the US is all talk and no action!

United States

Brinkmanship

1945

A policy of threatening to go to war if there is enemy aggression. This happened with the U.S. and Cuba in the Cuban Missal crisis. Those Cubans were too cowardly to ever go to war with the powerful U.S.A!

Iron Curtain

This is the fictional line that separates the prosperous countries of the west from the corrupt communist countries of the east.

Containment

1945

the fantastic policy in which the U.S. tried to stop the spread of foul communism but not completely destroy it. The U.S. created alliances and helped weak countries to resist the Soviets.

Yalta Conference

1945

Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin. This meeting was held to decide what to do with Germany after they finally surrendered. Germany was split into zones controlled by allied military forces.

Potsdam Conference

July, 1945

Harry S. Truman, crazy Stalin, and Churchill all met at Potsdam, Germany. Truman pried Stalin to allow free elections in Eastern Europe but he stubbornly refused. Stalin believes that capitalism and communism can not exist in the same world.

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

A program where the US gave aid to western European countries in effort to help them rebuild their nations. In doing this, the US saved many countries from falling into communism because communism appeals to the poor

Explosion of Joe 1

1949

A terrifying moment in history when the USSR exploded an atomic bomb of their own called Joe 1. The U.S. became even more on edge with the USSR and lead to a race to create a hydrogen bomb.

Korean War

1950 - 1953

38th parallel is a line that crosses Korea at 38 degrees north latitude which divided Korea. The north was communist and the south was supported by allies. In the Korean War, The UN was fighting against North Korea. After the war, Korea stayed divided with a demilitarized zone that separated the two regions.

Domino Theory

1954

The theory created by President Eisenhower that states that if one country falls to dreadful communism, then its neighboring countries will be corrupted by communism as well.

Vietnam War

1954

Vietnamese Nationalists and Communists joined to fight the French armies in the Vietnamese War. The French were defeated (as usual), which worried the US because of the domino theory.

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955

The Soviet Union was threatened by NATO so they created the Warsaw Pact. The alliance included the USSR, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

The British had control over the Suez Canal but Egypt wanted to take it over. Egyptian President Nasser sent troops to take it over which cause Britain to get angry. Britain gained support from other countries and took it over again, but the world community made Britain withdraw and allowed Egypt to have control.

Sputnik launched

August, 1957

The Soviets actually pushed an unmanned satellite above the earths atmosphere. This was very suprising cinsidering they are not the brightest country in the world. This caused a race for space. The US felt like they were falling behind so they tried everything they could and they eventually launched a satellite of their own.

Cuban Missle Crisis

July, 1962

The nasty Soviets built 42 missile sites in Cuba that we later discovered by spy planes. The US declared this a threat and demanded that the missiles be removed. The soviets agreed and in return the US promised to not invade Cuba.

Detente

1970

A detente was a policy of lessening cold war tensions which occured between the US and USSR under President Nixon and premier Brezhnev.

SALT Talks

1972

The SALT treaty was signed by Nixon and Brezhnev that was a 5 year agreement which limited the countries to 1972 levels the number of intercontinental ballistic and submarine-launched missiles each country could have.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan with the intention of proping up the communists and then quickly withdrawing. With support from the US, Afghan rebels fought hard against those evil soviets.

Regan's Strategic Defence Initiative

1983

President Ronald Regan created this to protect against enemy missiles even though it was not put into effect. This movement was at least a symbol of the US's powerful feeling of anti-communism.
