United States

Yalta Conference

February 1945

FDR, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin attended the conference to discuss the division of Germany. Although Stalin agreed to join the war against the Japanese, he was greedy enough to ask for compensation from Germany. Even after he sighed that non-aggression pact with Hitler!

Potsdam Conference

July 1945

After FDR's tragic death, President Truman, Churchill, and Stalin met. Stalin wasn't letting Eastern European countries hold elections, AND THAT'S UN-AMERICAN! Truman tried to persuade Stalin to ease up, but Stalin refused.

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

The United States was generous enough to aid the needy European countries that were not under Soviet control. We definitely didn't want needy countries to turn to communism for help. The program was $12.6 billion, but the containment we provided was worth the cost!

Explosion of Joe 1

1949

While we were innocently testing the first Hydrogen bombs, those crazy Soviets are setting off bombs over there!. Eisenhower, our new new president, appointed John Foster as our secretary of state. He proposed that we apply "Brinkmanship" to this arms race against the USSR.

Formation of NATO

1949

The aggressive Soviets were making the US and other countries nervous, so we formed NATO with 11 other nations. Just in case another country (USSR) attacked, our homeboys would back us up

Korean War

1950 - 1953

Above the 38th latitude line, Japanese troops surrendered to the Soviets, while under the latitude line, Japanese troops surrendered to the Amuricans. Those separate sections of Korea became North and South Korea. Those mean soviets made the North Koreans unhappy industrial workers, while we kept the southern Koreans happy farmers!

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955

Those scaredy cat soviets felt threatened by NATO, so the USSR had Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania join. The iron curtain was the dividing line between the Warsaw Pact and NATO, but NATO rules!

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

There was a huge problem going on around the Suez Canal. The British and French were joining up with Israel to retake the Suez Canal, which was rightfully the property of Egypt. For the first time in a long time, the US and the USSR were on the same side! We forced the Europeans and the Israelis to leave the canal.

Sputnik Launched

August 1957

Those nerdy Soviets launched Sputnik, an unmanned rocket that could go above the Earth's atmosphere. But don't worry, we've upped our game, and the Soviets will be sorry for being so technologically advanced!

Vietnam War

1964 - 1975

France was having a hard time while they were in Nam. We supported France, and we feared that Nam would soon become communist, a result of the Domino Theory. The US was determined to stop this domino effect from happening, so we began sending troops to Nam. This war was really between North Nam and us, and it ended with US troops leaving Nam. 2 years later, North Nam overran South Nam.

Detente

1970 - 1975

The Soviets finally got smart and decided, "Hey, we shouldn't be in a cold war with the fabulous Americans anymore! Let's cool down!" We agreed with them, and issued Detente, a lessening of tensions. Brezhnev and Nixon decided this was the best thing to do.

SALT Talks

1972

Nicknamed SALT, the strategic arms limitation talks was an agreement to limit the number of weaponry owned by a nation. 33 nations, including the US and stupid USSR, signed the agreement.

Cuban Missile Crisis

July 1972

The soviets were sneakily building and storing missiles in Cuba without the US knowing. A US spy plane discovered the missiles, and JFK demanded that the missiles be taken away from our beautiful country. The USSR finally agreed to our terms in return for not invading Cuba.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

The USSR invaded Afghanistan once they learned of the revolts against the communist government. Just like we were in Nam, the USSR was stuck fighting against Afghan rebels with American weapons. The Soviets finally withdrew and left the Afghan government to crumble. WE RULE!

Regan's Strategic Defense Initiative

1983

Ronald Reagan drifted away from Detente, and wanted to continue an anti-communism campaign. He issued his Strategic Defense Initiative, but it was never put into effect. GO REAGAN. GO MURICA.

USSR

Yalta Conference

1945

Stalin, Churchill, and FDR met to divide Germany among the Allies. We signed the non-aggression pact and Germany broke it, in addition to all the lives and stuff we lost. We made Germany compensate for it by paying us reparations, which was the only fair thing to do.

Potsdam Conference

July 1945

Truman, Stalin, and Churchill met in Germany. Truman tried to convince me that I should allow FREE ELECTIONS. What?? Any idiot knows that communism and capitalism just can't mix!

Marshall Plan

1948 - 1951

Truman strikes AGAIN. Now he's bribing the countries around the USSR to keep them from accepting communism. They're making policies to contain communism and stop my influence from spreading with a strategy they call Containment. I don't see why, communism is awesome!

Formation of NATO

1949

They just won't stop. Now 12 nations including the US are all ganging up against me. I think this counts as bullying.

Explosion of Joe 1

1949

We need a big weapon to stand a chance against the NATO. We tested a nuclear bomb nicknamed "Joe 1" after me, Joseph Stalin. The NATO says they are willing to go to the brink of war to prevent the spread of communism. They call it "brinkmanship".

Korean War

1950 - 1953

Korea was dived at the 38th parallel. Above the line Japan surrendered to the USSR and below it, to the US. We (USSR) funded North Korea to try to take over South Korea. Unfortunately, the US and UN helped the south so it was their troops versus North Korea. The effect was that South Korea remained independent.

Formation of the Warsaw Pact

1955

The whole NATO versus the Soviet Union just isn't fair. To balance power I formed an alliance with East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania in the Warsaw Pact. East Germany also built a wall to separate them from West Germany. This was a physical symbol of the iron curtain, or division of Europe into democratic and communist.

Suez Canal Crisis

1956

Egypt seized the Suez Canal and Britain, France, and Israel agreed to take it back, but backed out when world powers including Russia forces forced them to withdraw.

Sputnik launched

October 4, 1957

The Sputnik is the first unmanned satellite put in orbit by a rocket we Russians developed that could reach another continent, called ICBM, intercontinental ballistic missile. The U.S. saw how far behind they are and they are now struggling to catch up technologically.

Vietnam War

1964 - 1975

The USSR saw Vietnam struggling with the French and hoped they would be the first "domino" to fall in the Domino Theory, which said that once one nation turned to communism, all of Asia would. Of course, the US had to interfere again, helping out Vietnam! Grrr.

Detente

1970 - 1974

US policy of lessening Cold War tensions. It replaced Brinkmanship.

SALT talks

1972

The SALT talks, or strategic arms limitation talks was where 33 countries including the US and the USSR put limits on missiles.

Cuban Missile Crises

July 1972

Fidel Castro took over Cuba and the US was mean to them. We were so kind! The USSR gave them aid and because of our help, when the US attacked, Cuba EASILY beat them. Take that, Murica! Then we built missiles in Cuba, but the US found them and made us get rid of them. Bullies, I'm telling ya.

Invasion of Afghanistan

1979

The USSR's influence was growing in Afghanistan. After a Muslim revolt several years before and weakened the country, we took the opportunity to invade. BUT GUESS WHO RUINED OUR WONDERFUL PLAN AGAIN? Yep. The US funded Afgan rebels who drove us out... but later they turned into the Taliban and started terrorizing the US. So karma, I guess.

Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative

1983

This was some defense plan against missiles that USSR doesn't care about because Reagan wanted to use it but he never did.
