Independence, Johan Ferrier elected president. This gave citizens control of the country. Afterwards, though, 1/3 of citizens emigrated to the Netherlands.

Ferrier appoints Henk Chin-A-Sen of National Republican Party (PNR) to lead a civilian administration. This takes away the right to have a two-party election.

Armed forces seized power in coup. This continued rebellion against civilian administration.

Surinamese Liberation Army (SLA), composed mostly of escaped slaves, began guerrilla war with aim of restoring constitutional order. This begins the long journey for the citizens of building the government they want.

97% of electorate vote approved new civilian constitution, This dissolved civilian administration.

Rameswak Shankar elected president. This man tries to make peace with the rebels.

Rebels reject peace accord. This sets back progress toward better government.

President Shankar ousted in military coup masterminded by rebels. This begins a more free government.

Ronald Venetiaan elected president- New front for Democracy and development. This begins the new, free government being established.

Peace accord reached with SLA (rebels). This ends feuding within the country making it completely free.
