Saddam Husseinn Becomes President

Sadam Hussain taking power in Iraq was a major factor in what led up to the Iran-Iraq war. His aggressive military tactics, such as using deadly chemicals in warfare on the civillians in Iran, is what ultimately led to the destructiveness of the Iran-Iraq war. As a result of this war, Iraq fell into $80 debt during the cold war.

General Bakr Nationalizes Oil

1972 - 1973

In 1972, General Bakr of Iraq nationalized oil in Iraq. Immediately following this, President Nixon plotted to reverse this because since the oil would be in power of the states of Iraq, America would be unable to obtain oil from Iraq. Ameirca orchestrated arming against Bakr so that oil in Iraq will be available to America again.

The NY Times article that I read proved that the Regan Administration secretly provided Iraq with intelligence in 1982. The reason they did this was to help Iraq win the war against Iran in order to prevent Iran from taking over Iran, and cutting off America's oil supplies from Iraq.

Increase in education

1977 - 1986

Labor shortages caused by the Iran-Iraq war sparked an increase in education in Iraq because the government felt it was their only hope for the future. The number of students increased to 120,090 from 1977-1986.

Communities seek refuge in the capital

1980 - 1988

The start of the Iran-Iraq war caused whole communities to seek refuge in Iraq's capital causing enormous labor shortages in Iraq.

Students exempted from military service

1988 - 1991

The Iraqi government was pushing education and as incentive, they implemented an exemption of students from military service. This angered the poorer classes and those who were forced to serve longer because of shortages in manpower in Iraq.
