Battle of Bull Run

The battle occurred in Virginia. Many people died. Stonewall Jackson was the southern general. The south won the battle.

Congress passes a law that even though slavery is illegal in the North, if a slave is caught in the North he or she must be returned to his or her owner in the south.

Secession Began

12/01/1860

South Carolina was the first state to secede. This began the southern states starting the Confederate States of America.

Emancipation Proclamation

01/08/1863

President Abraham Lincoln gave a public speech. He said that the slaves in the south are free. They were not actually free because Abraham Lincoln wasn't president of the Confederate States of America. They didn't listen to him.

Battles

Battle of Shiloh

04/06/1862 - 04/07/1862

Union soldiers fought under General Grant against Confederate soldiers under General Johnston. They fought in Tennesee. They fought for two days. It was one of the bloodiest battles of the war

Surrender

04/09/1865

The North won. The south lost. It was the end of the civil war. The South gave up, under General Lee. They lost because they didn't have enough troops. And they didn't have enough food. This occurred in the Appomatox court house in Virginia.
