The United Nations form

January 1, 1942 - 2013

President Roosevelt along with Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of Britain), and Joseph Stalin (Leader of the Soviet Union) pledged to fight together in the war.

Marshall Plan

June, 1947 - 1952

The secreatary of the state at the time was George Marshall. He had feared that communist would take advantage of Europe being down under. So he proposed the 'Marshall Plan' to help re build Europe. This plan helped Europe with over $12 billion dollars.

Berlin Airlift

1948 - 1949

At the time the president was Harry Truman. He decided not to let West Berlin fall into the Soviet Union's control, and a airlift which carried food, fuel, and many other supplies.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization


The United States set up alliances with other nations, and then joined the Western Europe to form NATO.

Domino Theory


The United States was worried over all the wars Vietnam was winning, and that maybe Vietnam would fall into the communism. They thought if Vietnam became communism soon everyone would to like dominoes.



Many 'peasants' which were what people were referred to joined the Vietcong who opposed Diem. Guerillas were fighters who do hit and run attacks on the enemy.

Korean war

June 25, 1950

This was the line that divided Soth Korea, and Communist North Korea.

Demilitarized Zone

July, 1953

The both sides of Korea had already started in mid 1951. Dwight Eisenhower was the popular ww2 general was elected as president in 1952. He promised to go down to Korea himself to stop the fighting. In July, 1953 both sides signed the an armistice. Between the border of S. Korea, and N. Korea a Demilitarized Zone was built. This was where there was no military forces.

Warsaw Pact


This was when the Soviet Union formed their own millitary alliance. They forced Warsaw Pact neighbors to follow their policies.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

1957 - 2013

This program was made to direct American Space Program to compete with the one of the Soviet Union.



This was when the United States, and the Soviet Union were the 'SuperPower' Nations. That was because they had enough military, political, and economic strength.

Berlin wall


In 1961 Germany's government built a wall that divided East Berlin from West Berlin. They built the wall either to cut off contact between families, and friends or it was a symbol of the 'Cold War'.

Bay of Pigs Invasion


Castro had rounded up all exiles (People forced to leave their country) that had ended up on the Bay of Pigs. This strengthened Castro, and made a mockery of the United States.

Alliance for Progress


The president at the current time was Kennedy. He had urged Latin American countries to reform to help their peoples lives, and in return the United States would help aid to build schools, hospitals, and sanitation.

Organization of American States


The United States promoted economic progress through this by investing in transportation, and industry.

Peace Corps


This program allowed american volunteers worked in developing the countries as teachers, engineers, and/or technical advisors.

Cuban Missile Crisis

October, 1962

The president at the time was Kennedy, and they had found out that the Soviet Union had been shipping war weapons to Cuba secretly.

Gulf of Tankin Resolution

August, 1964

This day President Johnson reported that a North Vietnamese torpedo boat attacked one of the American boats patrolling the Gulf of Tonkin. The president took measures into his own hands as soon as congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. He ordered North Vietnam to be bombed.

Tet offensive

January, 1968

North Vietnam attacked cities throughout the South Vietnam, and Guerillas attacked the American embassy. This happened on a holiday known as 'Tet'. Then it became known as the Tet Offensive.

SALT Agreement

May, 1972

This Agreement limited the amount of nuclear weapons countries could have or use.
