1861 - 1864

The American Civil war changed the social and economic structure of the southern United States quite significantly. This impact has affected the South and southern culture for over 100 years.

Disfranchisement

1870

Prevented blacks from voting in the South. This was something affecting southern culture of the United States. Although it was techincally legal for blacks to vote during these times, many southerners used violence, intimidation, and assassination to try to prevent blacks from voting.

Plessy v. Ferguson

1896

This event marked the beginning of the "Seperate but Equal" act. It was a legal representation of Segregation. This meant that blacks and whites had to travel on seperate forms of public transportation. This just continutes to represent the racism present in the South during these times of internal conflict for the United States.

Teddy Roosevelt was elected President of the United States, twice.

President during both the Great Depression and WWII. He served 4 terms as president, longer than any other president in U.S. history. He was able to get America out of debt and he also was a large contriuting factor to America and WWII.

Fascism spreads throughout Europe

This period of time is when the idea of fascism was spreading like wildfire through countries like Italy, Germany, and Spain. Wolfe was in Italy, France, and Switzerland in 1924.

Benito Mussolini-First Fascist Government Leader

1920 - 1943

Mussolini rose to power in Italy during this time, creating the worlds first fascist government. Wolfe visited Italy in 1924/

Golden Age 20s

1920 - 1929

This age in Europe was a time of economic prowess for Europe, directly following WWI. Wolfe was in Europe most of the time from 1924-1926 working on novels.

World War I

1914 - 1918

World War I was a major event that chagned the lives of Americans quite drastically. American society went from producing goods to be self-sustaining in welness, to become self-sustaining in the war effort. The war economy also helped the nation's economy to grow by the end of WWI.
