England Enters WWII

Sept. 3, 1939

After Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, England and France declared war on Germany after they refused to stop their offensive against Poland.

U.S. Gets Involved in WWII

Aug. 1940

After Germany attacked England in the summer of 1940 known as the Battle of Britain, the U.S. got involved in WWII. The U.S. began making and supplying material of war to help England.

G.B. and U.S. Fight Together

Dec. 1940

G.B. and U.S. fought against the Germans in North Africa.

G.B. and U.S. Communicate

Aug. 1941

Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill held several personal conferences. They met first off the coast of Newfoundland aboard a navy destroyer in August 1941. There they issued the Atlantic Charter, an agreement in which they outlined the goals of the war.

U.S. Pledges Allegiance

Sept. 1941

The U.S. does not officially enter WWII, but President Roosevelt pledged to do all he could to help England in the war.

U.S. Enters WWII

Dec. 7, 1941

The U.S. officially entered the war after Japan attacked its Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Allies Invade Italy

July 10, 1943

American soldiers and other Allied Powers invaded Sicily and then coninued to the mainland of Italy. Italy was one of the Axis Powers and therefore an enemy of the Allies.


June 6, 1944

Just after midnight, the Allied assault upon Hitler’s ‘Fortress Europe’ began. The attack caught the German military by surprise. Allied deception plans convinced the Germans that an attack was unlikely at that time. More than 1,000 British bombers and other Allied troops attacked Normandy’s coastal defences.

Battle of the Bulge

Dec. 16, 1944

This battle between the Germans and the Allies was a final attempt by Hitler to split up the Allied Powers and turn the war back in his favor. This attempt failed and the Allied Powers won.

Beginng of the End

April 1945

Allied Powers attack Berlin, Germany where Hitler was located and had set up headquarters. Hitler and his wife Eva Braun committed suicide.

End of WWII

May 7, 1945

General Eisenhower accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. The surrender was officially signed on May 9, 1945 in Berlin. World War II had fimally ended with the Allied Powers victorious.

Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Aug. 6,1945

An American bomber droped the world's first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. Later another atomic bomb was also dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. This resulted in the unconditional surrender of Japan which had been a strong Axis Power.
