A Model T car could now be assembled in 93 minutes instead of 12 hours.

Karel Capek is the first to use the word robot.

1920

He used the word robot in his play that was about robots taking over the world. This is now a popular subject used in movies like The Matrix, Wargames and The Terminator.

The "Lilliput" was made in Japan.

1932

The "Lilliput" was a wind-up toy that was 15cm tall and could walk.

Isaac Asimov writes a story that describes the Three Laws of Robotics.

  2. A robot must follow instructions unless it conflicts with the first law.
  3. A robot must protect its owner unless it conflicts with the first or second law.

The first industrial robot arm was made Mr. Devol and Mr. Engleberger.

General Motors used this in assembly lines to complete hard tasks.

The Soviet Union launches a satellite which is the beginning of space robots.

General Electric makes a four-legged robot that can walk four miles.

The first artificial arm can be controlled by a computer.

Neil Armstrong landed on the moon thanks to computers and robots.

George Lucas made the first Star Wars movie.

The movie used C-3PO and R2D2 which inspired inventors to make more robots.

LEGO releases educational products and Honda launches a walking robot project.

1986

An eight-legged robot is built to collect dangerous volcanic gas samples.

1994

LEGO launches "Robotics Inventions Systems"

1998

Sony releases a robotic dog named AIBO.

1999

AIBO has artificial intelligence and acts like a puppy.

Honda makes ASIMO.

2000

Epson makes a robotic helicopter that takes pictures of natural disasters.

2004

Is only 7cm high.

Roomba the robotic vacuum cleaner sells 2.5 units.

2008

This shows that robots are now being used to do household chores.
